"Forbes: UNC has 'most valuable' hoops team in U.S.
Triangle Business Journal

The men's basketball team at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has been named the "most valuable" college hoops squad in the country by Forbes magazine.

The business publication puts the value of the Tar Heels at $26 million, just ahead of the $24.9 million valuation of the No. 2 University of Kentucky squad and the $24.4 million valuation of the University of Louisville team.

Duke University comes in at No. 5 on the list with a value of $22.6 million, while North Carolina State University's team is tied for No. 13 with UCLA at $13.6 million.

Forbes said its valuations are based on the amount of money that basketball programs contribute to their universities' academic programs and athletic programs, their conferences and their local communities. The rankings reflect figures from last season. "

when a UNC fan brags about this, just remind them the most valuable NBA team is the New York Knicks

or tell them "oh so thats how you pay your players so much under the table"

edit:

btw the Knicks happen to have a record of 8-21 right now...one half game worse than the Tarheels a few years back

I root for the Tar Heels sometimes

Not when they're playing State, just when they're playing a team I don't like such as Maryland or Duke

I like their uniforms and their colors too

^^ I actually do too... sometimes I just say things on here pro-Tar Heel to piss people off but when they play Maryland and ESPECIALLY Duke I actively root for them. I actually like Roy Williams and I like the way Hansbrough plays the game...

Don't get me wrong though, when State plays them I want to KILL them by 50 points in every sport..

V I don't know... he seems like he is not terribly talented but tough and has that attitude that I like. I'd take him being undersized and non-athletic ten times out of ten in college over an athletic pussy like Josh McRoberts..

hansbrough is definitely a hard worker, i just dont really like players who get rewarded i with shooting fouls for simply slamming their elbows into defenders

i want to see him play in the nba though so he can get a taste of his own medicine...or maybe somebody can just give roy hibbert some PCP when they knock UNC out of this year's tourney

I'm a big fan of the offense Roy employs...run and gun with that type of talent is like watching the Phoenix Suns-lite sometimes. You hate them, but sit back and watch them objectively. Forget the name and colors and just watch the game without a built-in bias. They're a fun team to watch...its just that most of your homer goggles are too thick to see that.

i think most people realize that UNC has a good basketball team and program

but the idea of somehow ignoring that they're unc just to watch them run and gun...fuck that...they're a good team but the most fun way to watch UNC is to watch them lose

13th is really good for State... its not like they have anyone outside of the state (aside from alumni obviously) randomly buying State gear... I dont think I had ever seen a State hat, jersey, shirt etc. ever before moving to NC so 13 is really good

How did I get into this convo? I hate the tarheels and I don't think I have ever posted in the same topic as slave famous or even posted anything about unc at all. I just know I hate them. Also if you go to this university it's almost a cardinal rule you hate them with as much passion as possible.

in fact I just went through all my posts here and none of them even have anything to do with carolina.I am about the most objective person when it comes to how good they are, I still hate them. When you don't like a team you still watch them but actively cheer against them always....ei for me patriots, tarheels, yankees, etc.

link to actual Forbes list along with a picture slide show. Interesting to note Xavier, coached by former State Assistant Sean Miller, comes in at number 20. Wouldn't expect them to be ranked so high or to be the highest ranked Mid-Major.

just in case anyone didn't read the full article, this may not be a reflection of merchandise sold (although UNC is #1 in that every year I believe)

after you take out the cost of facilities, coaching staff, equipment, travel, etc - I think that amount sounds about right for yearly revenue.

yeah, i know. I'll conceed that this is probably accurate. By the way, I've found out that if you really want to piss off Tarholes, just constantly refer to their school as UNC-CH, not just UNC. They might overlook it at first but after a while you can just see the irritation build.

"NC State's basketball program, ranked 13th, is worth $13.6 million. With expenses of only $3.1 million, the lowest of any team on our list, the NC State Wolfpack earned a profit of $7.9 million last season. In his first year with the Wolfpack, former NBA head coach Sidney Lowe led his alma mater to victories over Duke, North Carolina and Wake Forest University, marking the first time in four years that NC State beat all three in-state opponents during the same season.

so.....we have the least amount of expenses......

^Yes. After multiple rounds of bad press for certain errors in judgment, the University put State basketball in "time-out" in an effort to improve our reputation.

And it went on for so long that many fans forgot what we used to be. We're trying to get back on the map now though and that has to include spending some real money.

(I don't know what I'm talking about. I think I've read somewhere that we haven't been spending the big bucks since V.)

A guy I knew that was once in student government and routinely worked closely with athletics told me that we have some of the best people in place to figure out ways to save money and make money.

^I would sure hope so...

btw, we need to get an endorsement deal with Nike for basketball and football...I know the whole story about how they got us confused with unc or some crap like that a few years ago... (i dont care) The fact of the matter is that our Adidas gear SUCKS and needs to be sent back to that eurotrash dump from whence it came.

I agree. With Nike at least I can get a replica jersey that actually looks exactly like what the players are wearing. Plus Nike does throwbacks. DT STATE 44 throwback jersey ftw!
