I've been using outlook for years through multiple email accounts.....and everytime I deleted an email message it put it in the "deleted items" folder until I permanently deleted it. Ever since I set up the real time IMAP option through gmail, when I hit the delete button it instantly permanently deletes it.....I've looked through all the settings, but how do I get it to move to my deleted items folder????

No it does not move it to the trash at gmail

the Deleted Items icon is the only trash folder listed....

i think he has a legitimate concern. Trash/Deleted Items are stored for a reason - 1) sometimes you accidentally delete something you want back, and 2) sometimes you realize you do need something you deleted earlier. Gmail handles trash well, where it stores it for 30 days then purges it. Outlook also has several options of how to deal with trash, like emptying it every time you exit, or requesting confirmation when emptying.

If I knew that once I press the delete button then I will lose that email forever, I would be treading a lot more lightly than I normally do

There's another gmail folder called "All mail" - check there. If you delete a message from the inbox, you're just removing the "inbox" label from that message, same as using the archive feature in the web gmail.

the problem is he's doing this from Outlook. I completely agree - in outlook, if you have an email that you don't think you need, it's nice to just hit Delete, instead of filing it somewhere, where it will languish and take up space. If you hit Delete, though, you can quickly and easily get it out of your way, but still have access to it for a couple weeks if necessary.

In Apple Mail and Thunderbird, you can syncronize the Gmail Trash folder and the client Deleted folder, so when you delete in Mail/TB, it will go to Deleted/Trash, then Gmail will take care of it automatically in 30 days, when it will be removed from the server and client.

then what good is the "deleted items" folder for?

I've deleted numerous emails accidently as I sort through all the seeped through spam, mailing lists, junk, email forwards, etc....

I just want that second chance to retrieve an email, and be able to use IMAP gmail through outlook. I think ill just switch back to the old way of getting messages through gmail

i understand your point, but it sounds like you're being an ass just to be an ass.

Throughout the history of email, there has always been a Deleted Items folder that temporarily contains deleted items before they are manually or automatically expunged. It's the same reason we have a Trash Bin on our desktops - just in case something happens. Would you like it if Windows took away your trash bin? If that happened, you might as well put a shield over the Delete key so one slip of the finger doesn't permanently remove files from your system.

it has nothing to do with "being complacent", it has to do with "being human". Humans sometimes make mistakes, or change their mind.

Did you check the "All Mail" folder to see if your deleted message was there?

^Poe man, yes the old deleted emails are in All Mail. Thanks for pointing that out! I've been using gmail for years since the invitation days and never realized that it was in the all mail folder b/c i set up outlook with it at the beginning. Although it doesn't completely solve my problem, it solves it 95%....thanks for the suggestion
