forgive me if i'm using the incorrect terminology, but i think y'all know what i'm talking about. do any of you know the history behind it? i'm guessing it was around long before it was ever first recorded, but do you know who put it on record first (and the song's title)?

just a random pondering.

Quote :
"What is now recognizable as the standard 12-bar blues form is documented from oral history and sheet music appearing in African American communities throughout the region along the lower Mississippi River, in Memphis, Tennessee's Beale Street, and by white bands in New Orleans."

phonoautograph - patented 1857
phonograph - patented 1877

I'd bet a bundle that the blues standard was recorded at the latest in 1878.

doubtful

blues arose from call/response field songs which didnt really come about as a seperate art form uintil the late 19th century, and even then its tough to really tracxk since no one was interested in recording the black mans music. i posted the first jazz ensemble ever recorded and they were white. it wasnt until the white man began playing these songs that it became popular outside of new orleans/chicago.

"Though the use of the phrase in African American music may be older, it has been attested to since 1912, when Hart Wand's "Dallas Blues" became the first copyrighted Blues composition."

^I know, I know...

I feel like there had to have been at least one rich, "eccentric" music enthusiast who recorded it before then.

Not necessarily for release, but at least for personal use or research or something.

1878 doesn't make much sense, I know, but come on...
