Harrison Avenue Exit from I-40



The exit heading eastbound onto Harrison avenue. I encounter this every day. Even though there is a light, the rightmost lane can turn onto Harrison without intersecting traffic. It has it's own lane. People do not realize this and it pisses me off to no end. They sit there watching traffic go by waiting for an opening when THE OPENING IS SITTING RIGHT THERE WAITING FOR THEM. I have laid on my horn before for at least 10 seconds getting people to move their asses at this location.

to be fair, if everyone piled on the right lane the line would be atrocious and the light would have to stay green longer, delaying the entire cycle

but I haven't been at this intrsection in years, does traffic back up into the interestction with a green light?

The old one was bad, because they were cramming three traffic flows onto one exit. The new one is still bad, because no one knows how to get onto Walnut anymore, and the weird U-turn for Buck Jones is still there.

my first few years at ncsu the left turn light from gorman onto western towards bojangles was the shortest light ever. people would wait a second or two to go after it turns green, then leave bigger gaps between cars than if they were on the interstate going 80 mph. it always made me curse.

but then they fixed it and its not so bad. at least now you don't wait 6 minutes and then have 10 seconds to go.

Haha, I hate the western gorman light too. How about turning right from gorman onto western, coming from hillsboro street? You have a protected right arrow when the people on western have a protected left. They have this big-ass "U-Turn Must Yield" sign and then honk and flick you off when you make your right turn. I wish there was an effective way to communicate my hate to people there. Too bad I'd probably just crash if I tried to type into one of those scrolling LED displays or something.

I refuse to let them in, but I've had some asshole ride right beside me in the disappearing lane until we were past PB's. And yes, there was oncoming traffic that he ran off the road in the process.

I think it's a yankee thing, because that happened everywhere I work in Maryland, DC, and New Jersey. If there's enough room on the shoulder or the median to squeeze another car in, you can rest assured that some jackass is going to pass you in it during a traffic jam.

I think it's an asshole thing. Redneck impatient assholes do it on hilsboro street and i40 on-ramps just as yankee impatient assholes do it up there too. An undeserved sense of entitlement and predisposition towards jackassery is a trait that flourishes nationwide.

I'm talking about both. I drive through both Hilsboro street/Gorman intersection and the wade avenue exit at least twice a day. You're saying they're hugely different but both trivial? Ok, but sounds like you're one of those jackasses then- using the shoulder to pass merging traffic that only lasts for about 100 feet is pure jackassery.

I must not be understanding what you are complaining about at the Harrison exit then. The only time I've seen people driving on the shoulder of the road there is when people are trying to get around the people turning left onto Harrison from I-40 west so they can turn right.

I hate trying to merge onto the beltline from Wade Ave or Hillsborough St. The on ramps are uphill and you have such a short acceleration lane. My car is really slow, so even flooring it I can only get up to like 40mph before I have to merge.

^^OK, I was thinking of the off-ramp where people slide around on the turning cars. Yeah, the situation you're describing is very jackassish and dangerous. I rarely drive through that area and almost never during peak hours, so I don't see what the traffic looks like there.
