Dude, it's easy as hell.

Get yo'self some House-Autry Self-Rising Corn Bread Mix at the store. (or go with Jiffy if you prefer the sweet type of cornbread). Follow the directions on the back of the bag, requires egg, milk, and oil. If you don't have an 8-inch square or muffin pan, it works great in a 9 x 13 if you double the batch.

Mmm, good. I may have to make a batch tomorrow...

It's extremely easy, and cheap. to make.

It's better if you have a cast iron skillet.

But leave out the sugar

And put in some cheese, onions, and chili powder

The house-autry mix is just as good and less complicated. At least in my opinion.

Oh, and...onions? In cornbread?

Boy, that ain't right.

Sure it's just as good, it's exactly the same stuff. But why buy the mix if you have all the ingredients anyway? I guess if you don't have cornmeal then the mix would be a better idea.

Have you ever tried it?

[Edited on January 7, 2008 at 12:22 AM. Reason : chopped onions, like what you put on hot dogs]

From the fact that the original poster was talking about learning how to make cornbread, I figured he might not be the type to have a range of dry goods in his pantry. But if he does, then sure, might as well assemble it yourself.

And no, I've not tried onions in cornbread, but I tend to think it's fine just the way it is, topped by a nice pat of butter. I guess it might be good, but I don't think I'd be willing to experiment with a whole pan. (Plus I'm kinda iffy about onions in general...good in some things, hate them in others...)

Sadly, the Internets cannot yet provide cornbread on command.

Wait for it.
