So, this guy I know from high school is a LDS. He is attending this college I have never heard of but wanted to look into... BYU-Brigham Young University. I went to this school's website and it makes me curious how its legal.
First of all, to be admitted, you have to be endorsed by your "ecclesiastical leader" as one who is worthy to attend. One of the factors taken into consideration for admittance is seminary attendance.
Next, the tuition is twice as much if you are not a member of the church.
I try to understand others points of view, but this just seems ridiculous to me. Seems more like a cult than a religion?
Anyone have any insight? http://www.byu.edu/webapp/home/index.jsp 1/7/2008 3:28:11 AM |

1) You've never heard of BYU 2) Apparently, you've never heard of private universities either...

Well Duke is a private school, that doesn't make it legal for them to accept only Methodists.... 1/7/2008 3:43:57 AM |

^ uh that absolutely makes it legal for them to accept only methodists.

Really, if you think of it in the terms of BYU being a business entity (which technically they are)...then its not a whole lot different from Sams Club charging me 15% more if i'm not a member. You ain't a member of the church? You get charged 100% more. 1/7/2008 3:53:27 AM |

How about charging people from out of state more than what they charge people that are residents of the state the school is in?
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brigham_Young_University:
Quote : | "About 70% of student tuition is funded by LDS Church tithing funds, making tuition relatively less expensive than at similar private universities." |
So, it kind of makes sense that members of the church, the people that are paying the tithing, would get the cheaper rate.
It even goes on to say...
Quote : | "About 98% of the 34,000 students at BYU are members of the LDS Church" |
so I'm sure most of you wouldn't want to go there anyway.

Its definitely legal. Plus, as was mentioned, most of the families who's kids decide to go there have been paying much more than the cost of tuition to the church. Mormons live by a strict 10% tithe, so its really only fair that they get the discount. Still, its a good value in terms of price of education at a private university, even if you are not a member. Many of its programs are highly ranked, and the atmosphere is actually very conducive to learning.
I think a non Mormon would have fun there, as long as they didn't feel like they needed to drink or smoke or do drugs to have fun. My reasoning for this, is that there is always things to do since people don't use alcohol as their source of fun. 1/7/2008 8:55:25 AM |

Their football team probably isn't Mormon - especially the4 black teammates. Mormons believe that all blacks burn in hell - or at least they "used to." 1/7/2008 11:56:08 AM |

Haha, when I was forced to go to one there were two blks in the whole church. They would like you to believe that they have changed but deep down they still hate. 1/7/2008 12:58:49 PM |
robster All American 3545 Posts user info edit post |
thats just wrong ... there is no hate whatsoever. Blacks just would rather go to other churches. Is that small bit of truth really that hard to believe. (obviously they still dont like the fact that at one point in time, the lds church did not give them rights to hold offices, much like those rules still in place for women)
Mormon service is boring. At least, compared to a black service where people are getting demons cast out and all that jazz
