for a ME, I would suggest getting involved with ASHRAE. This is especially good if you have any interest in going into HVAC or some other aspect of building mechanical design. The student group is pretty small (and a good bit of the members are currently seniors, so there are only a few returning people) and there are quite a few scholarships . . . so you stand a very good chance of getting money if you just apply.
Make sure you fill out the scholarship form for the college of engineering (you can find it on the ME undergrad page of the MAE website).
But mostly, don't limit yourself to applying for big money scholarships. There are a lot of $500 ish scholarships, and everylittle bit helps . . . especially when you add them up. 1/7/2008 7:21:15 PM |

You can always get more financial aid (might have to be unsubsidezed or higher rate education loans were your parents income doesn't matter). 1/8/2008 4:30:51 AM |

I have a 3.86 and get loads of scholarships thrown at me, I guess it depends upon your major. CALS sure has a lot of scholarships. The way I see it, if its a new major it probably doesn't have a bunch of rich old guys opening endowments. ] 1/8/2008 12:40:36 PM |

My major is math, and I have two minors (stats and econ)....not really the newest of majors. But no help. The math department has about 5 scholarships and they won't give me anything. 1/8/2008 12:50:03 PM |

you can probably take out more loans, call the financial aid office and talk with them, they can tell you about what they can do (max out your loan eligibility). Avoid the banks though, you end up with high interest rates.
The problem is, if you get more scholarships they usually start taking away grants. I had a scholarship ($3000 a year), but they took away $1500 in grants because of it. 1/8/2008 2:20:45 PM |

If you're still a dependent, and depending on your parent's financial status, you have a possibility of getting a secondary government stafford loan if their credit isn't enough to get PLUS loans. If their down with paying for the PLUS loan while you pay them back, it gets a hell of a lot better rates than a private lender like a bank or sallie mae. They'll rape you on interest rates. Don't do private student loans unless you absolutely have to.

Yea GPA doesn't have as much to do w/ it as I originally thought. I graduated high school w/ a 4.44 GPA and I have a 4.0 in MAE @ NCSU and I only got I think 1/4 of my college paid in scholarships. I got the SECU: People Helping People Scholarhip and the Chancellor's Leadership Scholarship. I'm not complaining about getting what I got, it's just that all through high school, my friends and family kept telling me "Oh, you'll have NO problem getting a full ride. Don't sweat it." It didn't turn out that way unfortunately.
To give you an idea for a scholarship: Every year the State Employee's Credit Union (SECU) gives out one $10,000 (spread over 4 years) scholarship to every public school in the state (I believe. That's what I've been told). It was the one I put the least time into: short essay and no interview. 4/28/2009 6:24:17 PM |

In terms of scholarships, no idea. However, loans got a lot better in grad school. I was able to borrow between $18k-$20k a year as an independent graduate student. There's public information out there somewhere on the maximum per year.
Undergraduate at a junior/senior (at least a few years ago) the maximum loan was $5,500 while a dependent. Ended up cooping two rotations to help pay for a good part of it.
Go talk to the financial aid office, they will be your best source. Make SURE you schedule an appointment with them though.4/29/2009 8:58:00 PM |

another great option is to join your major's professional organizations, so in your case ASME I believe? They always have great opportunities. There is a university form as well, I think it's already been posted. Talk to your academic advisor and undergraduate coordinator. 5/27/2009 8:17:24 PM |

I have a decent (def not best) GPA, do lots of activities, have good connections in high places, talk with my advisor a TON who is one of the people on the 'who gets a scholarship' committee, in my major's professional society...
and I ain't got shit. They must have a dart board for those scholarships they give out all the time to people who don't apply for them. 5/27/2009 9:13:38 PM |

Shredder cmon man. You cannot be serious. Have you tried googling scholarship? If your smart enough to figure out how to join the wolf web and how to post, much less create your own thread, than I know you are smart enough to research scholarships for your specific industry/field.
First create a list of all the scholarships you've found that you are eligible for. Every scholarship. Learn to be saavy with internet search engines. Reaching out to people on the wolfweb is a good start but keep that momentum going and research this stuff on your own.
Next, prioritize the sequence of the scholarships based on application deadlines. This is key as people who fill out your letters of recommendation will appreciate it if you can hand them all your scholarship lor forms at once rather than 40 different times.
Next, identify which scholarships are local, statewide, and national. Prioritize accordingly based on the chances you feel you have of legitimately winning the scholarship. Example - research how many people applied for and how many won each specific scholarship in the past 2-3 yrs. This can be done by contacting the scholarship committee of each respective scholarship.
Next, prepare your essays with the understanding that most will be used multiple times for different scholarships. Create basic template essays and adjust them accordingly for each committee.
Finally, follow up with the scholarship committees to ensure your applications got there and that your transcripts did as well. Never hurts to be nice to the people handling and judging your applications.
Dont be scared holmes. Scholarships are there for the taking. You just gotta take that shit. Ninja turtles for life. 6/12/2009 7:43:28 PM |

The one time being white with a traditional family has severely fucked me over. It is a good thing my dad is loosing his job just in time for me to not benefit on financial aid.
Any tax advice? I still get fucked on taxes, paying 3-5k a year in taxes with getting maybe $30 back... would be really nice to pay for tuition with money I worked for instead of paying the government so that I can get a loan from the government in the amount I gave them, and then paying nearly twice after interest...fail 6/14/2009 7:13:23 PM |

haha, that's it. I'm not 'savy enough.' You're an idiot, this thread is about where to get scholarships, not about filling them out. You think many of us haven't looked at private scholarships? Seriously, you're advice is terrible. Get out of here with that, I have yet to see you make ONE recommendation on where to get a scholarship (yes I know you said private, but not a particular entity).
And you're saying there is nothing sadder then a 4.0 student who cant get a scholarship? Wow you really are an ignorant shit.
