So I brought my new puppy to the vet, she got all her initial shots (shes about 3 months old, was a stray till two days ago). Yesterday she was very playful and drank a ton of water. Today we went to the vet, he said she was healthy but had a few worms, so she got her dewormer. She refuses to drink water now, any advice on getting her to drink, or should I bring her back to the vet? 1/9/2008 4:24:33 PM |

Thats what I thought initially (though she was drinking any water she could get her hands on yesterday, so even that seemed strange), but its been for the last 6 or so hours that she hasnt drank much at all, and she was loving some ice cubes last night but now she just plays with them but wont lick them. Oh and forgot another important part of my initial post - shes been throwing up alot. It just looks like clear phlem, but its happened maybe 5 or 6 times, and sometimes she just makes the noise and motion but nothing comes out. 1/9/2008 4:30:22 PM |

You tried offering her gatorade?
Her stomach could be upset from the dewormer.
I taught my dog to drink gatorade orange flavor. After she got over the initial WTF is it? she loved the stuff and it's way cheaper than unflavored pedialtye, plus when you travel it hides the strange new water taste that some animals don't like. 1/9/2008 4:31:57 PM |

take her back to the vet, she might've caught something drinking water yesterday and now her stomach is upset. I think our puppy had a similar problem after we got her... 1/9/2008 4:32:33 PM |

Yeah, if she's dry heaving the vet did too much at once (large load of worms and vaccines can be a lot to deal with for a little probably malnourished stray), or she caught something.
Call them and let the vet know. 1/9/2008 4:34:51 PM |

Should I give her any food? From some of the things im reading on google they are saying just leave her alone and dont feed her for 24 hours and such. 1/9/2008 4:35:01 PM |

I'd either do electrolytes, or some watered down mashed potatoes or overcooked rice with really lean hamburger. Watered down canned food is good too, preferably something without corn, wheat, or preservatives (all can upset dog's stomachs easily). 1/9/2008 4:53:50 PM |

my dog will frequently go a whole day or longer without water, and then drink a whole bowl at once. like a camel or something. she's been like that since she was a puppy. still, i'd be safe and call the vet though. 1/9/2008 4:55:12 PM |

I think dogs drink water only when they are thirsty. Im not sure though. Try giving it some pepsi or some sweet tea. He might just like the tastier dranks 1/9/2008 5:23:26 PM |

We brought her to the vet, he said she looked healthy but might just be having a reaction to the stress of so much, he gave her some benadryl and now shes running around downstairs. 1/9/2008 5:39:06 PM |

Next time get all the shots at different times (they shouldn't charge you for an exam each time, and it's quick to just give a shot) so if one of them caused the problem you'll know what it is.
If it's the parvo combo, try getting it without lepto and corona (usually in the liquid part, so they can just use some sterile water in the powder). 1/9/2008 7:55:15 PM |

She's probably vomiting because she hasn't eaten. My dog does that if she hasn't eaten all day. Get her some wet food. Or go to petsmarts and get one of those lamb and rice sausages. Slice and finely chop it up and mix it with her dry food.
