I'm hoping to get a recommendation from a professor at each school I attended, even if I dropped out
do you think that demonstrates that I have an interest in my schooling and that I might have left an institution for reasons other than education? 1/10/2008 10:16:30 AM |

Don't do it. That's my recommendation. 1/10/2008 10:19:25 AM |

I am only applying to one school because there's really only one MA program that I want to do (that will also make me employable... all of the other programs I like ensure that I will be over-educated, under-skilled, broke and jobless; ex. MA in Literature [anywhere], Ph.D in Women's Studies [Emory])
do you think the admissions folks might be impressed that I can still get a recommendation from a school I haven't attended for 4 years? 1/10/2008 10:20:13 AM |

I'd get recommendations from professors who are strongest in the area of study that you are applying to grad school for. Whether it that happens to come from multiple schools or not I think you should put your strongest foot forward. 1/10/2008 10:27:30 AM |

it does, indeed, come from multiple schools
I'm choosing professors that are strongest in critical theory critical theory is a large component of the program that I am applying for 1/10/2008 10:32:03 AM |

Yep get letters from the strongest people you can, also ask in plenty of advance.
I would also send the place(s) you're applying some written work even if it's not required. 1/10/2008 10:37:02 AM |

an 8-10 page writing sample is required
and a 1000 word statement of intent hmm and a 1 page resume
I'm finished with the resume and writing sample the final date is Feb 15th
I'm almost done getting my transcripts sent except I've got a hold at UNCA (probably library fines) and NCSU still needs a consent form 1/10/2008 10:38:58 AM |

grad school is basically like going to the minor leagues for a few years so you'll have a better chance of making it big whenever you get called up
Me? I'm taking my chances and going straight to the big leagues 1/10/2008 10:47:17 AM |

all I'm going to say is that you don't go into my field if you want a "job" there's money to be had in it but you've got to ride the train to the end of the line
become part of the academic machine... start publishing and lecturing 1/10/2008 10:50:28 AM |

yeah
my BA is in Literature
this MA will be in Media Studies (and it has a practice component, not just theoretical)
I figure I can get well networked there and work in a mass medium for a while then I can get my Ph.D in Literature or Women's Studies or something somewhere work that job until I retire 1/10/2008 10:54:16 AM |
