Okay i just got into this really hardcore a week ago.

I'd always liked Pelican, and one day while discussing music with a friend of mine, he recommended Red Sparrows - Every Heart Shines Towards The Sun a few months ago, but out of my subconscious 'try not to listen to things I've never heard of policy' i never did.

also, this Neurosis band is pretty decent, a second listen (first time after i discovered scott kelly sang on leviathan) revealed a more complex song structure than i first heard.

thats a terrible way to approach music these days! all the good music (especially metal and all its branches) is coming from those types of bands right now besides a few token bands.

pelican is alright. their drummer is terrible but i still like them. I like the following bands that are kind of in the similar 'ambient metal' vein:

Giant (http://www.myspace.com/giantnc) (their new song horned and blind in its entirety is very good and i think you might like it, just listening to the clip online of it is kinda meh)

Tides

Isis

Rosetta

i've been pushing this band on here for quite some time...their "Age" ep was one of my favorite releases last year and they released their full length not too long ago

^^^ hey hey.

i said subconcious. Yeah their drummer is pretty awful live.
I saw them on acid and i could tell his double bass was off.

but thanks for all the other stuff to look up, the isis i heard i wasn't terribly a fan of, but i don't like most music until i hear it a few times and get a chance to listen to it in depth.

^^ Yes I'm going. It has been moved to Lincoln Theater in case you didn't know. I luckily found out when I was checking out their site Saturday night. I had even bought tickets online a month ago. I wonder if they plan on sending an email to let everyone know.

i tried listening to all the Julie Christmas bands, but her vocals aren't my style so far.

The chick from Kylesa is much better.
