Stern just started year 3 at Sirius. When he started they had 800,000 subscribers, now they have over 8 million. No one in the history of radio could have pulled that off. (maybe Rush Limbaugh )

It can be argued than more people listen to Howard Stern in the morning than watch David Letterman at night. Letterman had 5.5 million viewers in his first show back from the writers strike.

I would like to mention that Howard isn't the only one that can do the google search thing.

For example, last week on Opie & Anthony, they were discussing political candidates and did some website that matches you with your best candidate by your answer to questions. Jim Norton was getting his results and one of the guys said "Jimmy tied...." and got interrupted by a joke from Norton. This turned into a huge deal as Norton believed the top candidate for him was named "Jimmy Tide", because Anthony had matched with some obscure candidate named Duncan Hunter, when he actually tied his results between Hilary and Obama. Once he finally figured out what a silly goose he had been, a great laugh was had by all.

The point is, during that time before he figured it out, and afterwards when they were discussing the fictitious presidential candidate, it also became the top searched topic on Google Trends for the day. And this happens fairly regularly where they will mention something and it becomes a top trend as well. So I wouldn't say that alone proves the power of Howie, just perhaps the power of a radio show that has a large fanbase.
