A threat of a slight mix cancels classes for a couple hours, but for the past couple of years, measureable snow and ice keeps classes and campus running on time with accidents and slips. You know, we do have a friggen meteorology school here (I am a student of it). There is barely a chance of sleet tomorrow.

Classes Start at 10 A.M. on Thursday; Essential Personnel Report as Designated
Last Updated: 6:00 pm, Wed, Jan 16
North Carolina State University will operate at Status 3 until 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17.
Chancellor James Oblinger announced the decision based on the latest National Weather Service forecasts for Thursday morning, predicting mixed precipitation and potentially icy roads.
What This Means: The University is open under adverse weather status, but classes with a starting time earlier than 10 a.m. are cancelled. Classes starting at 10 a.m. or later will be held as scheduled, and the University expects to be fully operational by 10 a.m. Other public events on campus scheduled to begin before 10 a.m. on Thursday will be held only with explicit exception granted by the vice chancellor for finance and business.
Essential Personnel: Employees deemed "essential" should report as required by their unit. Other employees (those not designated as "essential") are encouraged to report to work as soon as possible and practicable, not later than 10 a.m.
Making Up Missed Coursework: Students who miss scheduled activities will be allowed to make up any work missed. Faculty members should make arrangements to complete all interrupted activities.
Status Updates: Any additional announcements concerning classes, event, and work schedules will be posted on the NC State home page, on the emergency call-in line at 513-8888, and announced via local media outlets.
The full adverse weather regulation is online at http://www.ncsu.edu/policies/campus_environ/health_safety_welfare/REG04.20.7.php
The new text message system is not yet available for updates, since it is still in testing phase, which should be conducted later this month.
Please do not reply to this message. It has been sent to you from a university mailbox used only for adverse weather broadcast e-mails and not monitored for responses." |

So what will happen is it will do nothing but rain... then next time they wont preemptively cancel and it will end up snowing or freezing rain while everyone is already on campus and cause another armageddon.

Nah, nah. Jamz0r is right. Starting to switch to a mix around the Triad, and it's about 36 around here. Snowing in Asheville, G'ville/Spartanburg, Columbia, North Georgia and East Tennessee. Looking like it will turn over a little earlier. Still not sure how long it will last once it does change over. 1/16/2008 9:30:46 PM |

i was wondering about this too
when it snowed around this time last year, i fell and busted my ass no less than 3 times while walking around campus because they fucking didn't cancel class
also the wolfline bus i rode (after getting tired of busting my ass) was going down that small hill behind mann and skidded down the hill on the ice
you better believe i called up the provost's office and bitched1/17/2008 12:44:09 AM |

north carolina has to be the hardest place to forecast in the winter for precipitation type
slight slight slight variations in the direction of the wind coming off the high pressure things can cause the cold air to be funneled in or out based on the mountains
someone back me up here with the real words. i havent pursued meteorology since like 7th grade when i used to go visit greg fishel 1/17/2008 12:54:01 AM |

^yea, i know, i'm usually not one to bitch/ try to get out of this sort of thing.
in all honesty though, an accident or anything like that that would require me to pay some money is the last thing i need right now.
edit: i'm just gunna see how it is. if it turns out to all be hooplah then i'll go, but if it actually is icy and shit around 10am, fuck it i'm not goin.
