So, for christmas, 2 sisters agreed that sister 1 would do most the xmas shopping and sister 2 would pay her back for half the cost. So xmas rolls around, sister 1 spends about $150 on presents for most the family and regifts some candy she got from students. Sister 2 gets some itunes gift cards for free from work and uses credit card points to buy another gift card, all told worth $150, and they use those for the remainder of the family, instead of going out and buying gift cards.
So A: should sister 2 still pay sister 1 half of what sister 1 paid for since sister 2 didn't actually spend any money? B: should they call it even since sister 2 could have used those gift cards for herself?
C: Should they compromise since sister 1 still spent time and gas shopping for gifts? 1/16/2008 9:10:31 PM |

i'm glad that if this were me and my brother this wouldn't be a problem - stuff like this just comes out in the wash
it's family - let it go - don't be mad because sister 2 is more resourceful 1/16/2008 9:15:01 PM |

I'm sister 2... and I'm willing to compromise and give her $50 because she did do the actual shopping (tho she loves shopping), and I know if I don't give her something she's going to be a huge bitch about it.
But apparently its all or nothing 1/16/2008 9:20:41 PM |

from what you typed first, it seems that sister 1 bought $150 worth of presents to be $75 each, rather than her going out to spend another $150 for the other sister. is that correct? 1/16/2008 9:31:21 PM |

She would have gotten 25$ gift certificates to the mall for our 4 cousins... and I decided we might need something more than a $20 coupon book for our dad and step mom, so I volunteered the extra $50 restaurant gift card. 1/16/2008 9:57:13 PM |

I'd say B. Just because she didn't physically spend money doesn't mean she didn't give 150 dollars value of gifts. 1/16/2008 10:19:40 PM |

So was there anything in the agreement about the part that wasn't included in "most"? Because if you agreed to pay half and then just decided without consulting your sister that you'd give the cards, you should definitely pay half.1/17/2008 9:29:52 AM |

you made the deal, you should pay it
the point of it all was to help each other out and make holiday shopping less of a blow to both of your funds. In the end, she still spent $300 and you spent zero.
Now, I've been in the situation of "sister 1" before but I just let it go 'cause I'm a nice big brother like that 1/17/2008 9:35:50 AM |

I would say to not count the itunes cards since they were free, but the credit card rewards were somethign you could have spent elsewhere . . . so total price of gifts is $150 + $50 = $200. Each pay half and you have already spent $50 . . . so you owe her $50 1/17/2008 9:37:01 AM |

^^no, in the end she still spent $150, and I'm out $75 plus the $150 in gift cards that I could have spent on myself. 1/17/2008 9:58:45 AM |

Well if you're going to be all whiny about it, you should have kept them for yourself and paid her the amount you told her you would pay her in the first place. 1/17/2008 10:01:01 AM |

yeah I'd say you clearly owe her $50
however, I would give her $75 if she wanted to be a cunt about it honestly, who holds their family members to debts like this?

You agreed to split the costs of buying the gifts with sister 1, just because you threw in some gift cards beyond the original agreement doesn't mean you shouldn't have to pay her.1/17/2008 10:08:02 AM |

Sister 1 spent $150 expecting she would get $75 back. Unless the deal from the start was to spend $300 on XMAS presents, you owe her $75.1/17/2008 10:08:06 AM |

B they both pitched in the same amount, no matter how they got them.
Otherwise, the shopping sister should not have accepted the gift cards as givable presents.

you told her you would pay half, she went in thinking you would pay half.
and no, those gift cards you got are not relevant, because it was something extra YOU decided to do.
