Since a month ago my dog has been driving me crazy. She'll shit in the house moments after we've taken her out and she's already gone. We haven't changed anything about her routine (Feeding, watering etc) and now she even shits in her kennel.
This dog used to be able to hold it all day, and would hold it 2 days straight if it was raining outside.
Anyone else have this issue before?
I'm about to put her down if I have to take another month of this 1/16/2008 9:58:14 PM |

you would put a dog down for shitting? that is seriously fucked up. atleast try to give her up for adoption. and um, have you consulted a vet about it? that seems like step numero uno
edit: i realize it is frustrating, but she could be sick. seriously...have you been to the vet? and i wouldn't put a dog down just for this reason.

seriously dogs don't usually shit where they live, so if she's shitting in the kennel you're either leaving her in there too long or she has a medical problem.
this is the part where responsibility kicks in. 1/16/2008 10:55:37 PM |

And I'm hoping the "putting the dog down" comment was a damn joke.
Go bug the vet and make sure she's getting enough exercise. Try switching her to a different/better type of food.1/16/2008 10:59:12 PM |

its a dachshund right, they're terrible about bathroom habits
if its going multiple times a day, take it to the vet
otherwise, try taking the dog on longer walks 1/17/2008 12:23:16 AM |

Considering having a dog put to sleep because of bathroom problems is fucking ridiculous. Sounds like you lack the maturity and level of responsibility needed to care for a dog. I feel sorry for the little guy. 1/17/2008 2:08:45 AM |

it's a dachshund?
my mother-in-law has one, and it will seriously crap in any house, any time, any given day. And no, it's not sick. It has done it from day 1. Most always craps in a house the first time it's there, so annoying. They haven't figured out how to stop it ... just seems totally random. 1/17/2008 2:22:42 AM |

this only proves that you were not responsible enough to get a dog in the first place. I hope you don't have children. Children tend to crap whenever they have to for a while too. And longer IF YOU DON'T TRAIN AND CARE FOR THEM CORRECTLY. 1/17/2008 3:21:14 AM |

one of my dogs just randomly started shitting everywhere last summer. in his crate, outside, on the carpet. He was well trained previously so we figured something must be up after a day of it. Took him to the vet and turns out he had a stomach parasite. Vet gave us some sort of cream shit to feed him through a syringe for a few days. Cleared it right up and had no further issues. 1/17/2008 9:46:23 AM |

wow...oncoming trolls. Save it for Chitchat.
Yes, it is a dachshund. Gods most neurotic breed.
Yeah...I'd totally put down a dog for shitting in the house
Anyway, yes, when it's raining she has the option. You can stand out there for an hour (I've done it) and all she tries to do is run to the door. It's a dachshund thing.
I take her out 4x a day, after breakfast (7am), after snack (2pm) after dinner (7pm) and before bed (10pmish). Which is a fuck load more than most of you with dogs do.
And no, it's not terror poop, christ. I don't chase after her with a baseball bat. We've had her 3 years and she just started doing this randomly.
And no, I'm not paying $50 to go to the vet just to have her say "Take her out more." It's not diahrrea.
I told my fiancee I think she's mad that we got a cat.

You came here asking if anyone had a similar problem. Someone did:

I can't punish her, but completely agree. How do you smack around an 8lb dog? I've tried squirting her with a water bottle and she just closes her eyes and licks the water.1/17/2008 10:47:52 AM |
Malagoat All American 7117 Posts user info edit post |
wait, you won't punish her, but you'll put her to sleep?
if she just licks the water off, try spraying some "Bitter Apple" in the dog's mouth after it has pooed. My old dog used to have a behavior problem, my parents tried obedience training, nothing worked until we tried the Bitter Apple. She ceased her problem activities immediately.
I'm pretty sure you can get it at Petsmart.... 1/17/2008 10:59:49 AM |

Jesus, people. It was a JOKE. You new kids seriously lost your sense of humor.
Quote : | "if she just licks the water off, try spraying some "Bitter Apple"" | Tried that stuff. Works on our other dog, but the dachshund LOVES the stuff.
I was told by the trainer not to put her in her kennel as punishment since it's suppose to be her "home" and safety spot.
And I usually don't have to punish her. She's generally a pretty good dog.1/17/2008 11:03:33 AM |

I'm not taking her to the vet over this. It's too expensive right now, and I can't afford it right now since I just got her a teeth cleaning which wiped me out for another month.
It's never EVERY day, but it'll be like randomly 2 days straight then nothing for 4 days...then she'll just pee on the carpet and walk off happy. 1/17/2008 11:05:14 AM |

DirtyMonkey All American 4269 Posts user info edit post |
let me get this straight..
you're not going to take her to the vet. you're not going to "punish" her. you're not going to put her down.
so basically you're not going to do anything. is this just a rant-because-my-dog-shits thread or are you actively seeking a solution to the problem yet choosing to ignore all reasonable advice? 1/17/2008 11:10:54 AM |
MeatStick All American 1165 Posts user info edit post |
Unless I can get reasonable advice. I'm not going to rush to the vet every single time my dog does something off. And I doubt anyone on this board can say they toss out $50 for their dog every time they don't like something.
And this doesn't seem like a medical thing. I think it's more behavioral, since she is above all things, a Dachshund.
And I only put animals down if they are very old and cant' function anymore, or in serious pain. And Meaty is not in pain. When she isn't randomly hiding poop, she's jumping around and chewing her toys.
And I usually put her in her kennel as punishment, until a trainer told that wasn't something you do. 1/17/2008 11:13:46 AM |

Usually true, but after working for a kennel for 2 years, I found this not to be true about all dogs.

You need to walk her a little bit longer...
And... are you giving her the same amount of attention that you did before she started pottying all over the house...?
And also, have you changed her diet recently? 1/17/2008 11:28:16 AM |
MeatStick All American 1165 Posts user info edit post |
Called my vet (for all you out there that think the Vet is the only answer.)
"It sounds more like a behavior thing, since there isn't anything wrong with the stool. However, I'd suggest bringing her in so you can get a full blood panel done ($150) in case it's something medical."
I don't know if she's being straight up with me, or if she's trying to slap on a bunch of shit to make me pay more.
Called my friend in NJ who is a vet. "Since she's adopted from a pretty crappy place, she probably aged a lot faster. This is probably early dog dimensia, or she's anxious about something. Bring her into the vet if the stool is bloody/mucousy or if she acts more lethargic."
So....I feel still kind of stuck.

Yeah, since I've been taking 2 weeks off before I start my job, I've been with her all day. I even take her on trips with me, and we've been taking the usual amount of walks (About a 1/2 mile, her legs can't handle it) every day. Same food.
