I have used Eclipse IDE for Java for a few years and really like it.
I was going to use the same IDE for C. but it looks like i need to get the compiler (MinGW?).
Anyway, i'm thinking about using another environment to program in. Any suggestions? or just stick with Eclipse? 1/17/2008 11:17:09 AM |

there is an eclipse build for c/c++ specifically that's pretty nice. I like bloodshed dev-c++ myself. 1/17/2008 12:14:33 PM |

what about good IDEs for php? I tried PHPEclipse.net but it sucked. been using editplus for years, but i'd love to use a modern IDE designed for use with php 1/17/2008 1:11:25 PM |

You can probably get a Visual Studio Express product for C++
^The only one thats even decent is Zend Studio, but I still prefer just using dreamweaver or ultraedit

^^^^Should really probably be its own thread, but no, I have yet to find a really solid IDE for PHP that I find functionally usable AND attractive. 1/17/2008 5:45:55 PM |

C/C++: i'd like to know a good IDE and compiler for it as well - specifically a C or C++ PIC MCU compiler PHP: i use dreamweaver code view personally, but know people that swear by eclipse+zend studio beta plugin

Eclipse for C++ is like driving nails into your nutsack.
Eclipse for Java is like getting your dick and balls sucked by halle berry, scarlett johansson, and angelina jolie all at once. 1/17/2008 10:17:55 PM |

I can't imagine how they'd all be able to do that simultaneously. 2 at a time at the most, or take turns at the least 1/17/2008 11:32:18 PM |

PDT is a lot better than phpeclipse http://www.eclipse.org/pdt/
PDT + aptana is pretty solid.1/19/2008 10:09:37 PM |

Seriously guys:
http://www.microsoft.com/express/product/default.aspx
I mean, I work in the Visual Studio product group. Express editions are FREE and are just for one man shop programming like you guys need. There's versions for VB, C#, C++ and Web Dev.
Give it shot, worst case you just uninstall it. But I have to say, for anything outside Java, VS really is pretty damn good.
Also, FYI Visual Studio 2008 just shipped in November, so it's hot off the presses

^^ I've used Visual Studio Express 2k5 for C# and I must agree that is one fine piece of free software.
for php, i've tried a ton of things but most coding i do is via ssh so i stick with vim. 1/20/2008 12:55:00 AM |

Notice: my post has nothing to do with a C IDE, however it's responding about a PHP IDE ...
I came across a decent looking IDE for PHP called phpdesigner2008 ... I looked at the 2007 version, I guess it's mostly the same but not as clean-looking.
Anybody have experience with it? I currently mix between eclipse and any general text editor and I'm liking what I see so far. 1/23/2008 9:30:50 PM |

Okay, so I'm about to take CSC 230. I've got a Mac and a PC and don't really care which I use. For this class specifically, and I guess in general as well, does anybody have any recommendations? I'm a big fan of Visual Studio, but I don't know if its cobbled together specifications of what C is will interfere with CSC 230. Other options are Eclipse or XCode, I guess, or just a good editor and gcc. Any thoughts? 8/14/2010 4:32:47 PM |

^ for that level of a class, it doesn't matter what you use. 8/14/2010 4:47:50 PM |
spöokyjon ℵ 18617 Posts user info edit post |
The level of the class aside, I'd be interested in recommendations for non-painful development environments. I know I could get through the class with gcc and Pico, but I don't plan on doing that to myself. I don't need any fancy features, so what I'm primarily looking for is a good editor, but stuff like intellisense and whatnot never hurts. 8/14/2010 5:08:03 PM |

Visual Studio. And look into writing your software in C# if you can take the performance loss. I never knew a user interface could be so easy to build. 8/14/2010 6:57:20 PM |
