for you and/or early refund?
im impatient, and would rather not wait for the govt to send me my check.
i figure someone at HRblock or whatever could figure out the deductions and shit better than i could. 1/17/2008 2:02:16 PM |

depends on how complicated they are about $200 for a cpa to do mine, but he usully gets me back $1,200-2000 more than turbotax, well worth the investment, and all i have to do is sign 1 piece of paper 1/17/2008 2:06:44 PM |

^^WTF is a cpa doing to get you back that much more
i mean after my house and auto expenses, i wouldn't have anything. what is a cpa digging up that you can't do yourself? 1/17/2008 2:10:59 PM |

is there a way to get some sort of free estimate of what my return will be?
do i absolutely have to have my W2?
how do i find places that give discounts for students?
would i benefit more from going to a CPA, or doing one of these small "TAXSERVICE4U" gigs?
I don't have any assets or anything. i basically just work and do fulltime school. i have stupid bills like phone, insurance and shit (if that matters)
no savings, no stocks, none of that complex shit.

uncompensated work expenses, all the side income adjustments for contracting and consulting, tuition payments, interest on loans, etc., etc. everyone can get it, its just a matter of spending hours trying to figure out the forms, which is why a pay someone to do it, a 600-1000% return on $200 aint too bad in my opinion, considering my time is worth $45 an hour, if i waste 5 hours doing taxes, i lose 1/17/2008 2:13:41 PM |

i do it myself in like an hour, it's not hard.

its probably different when you work for yourself and have a 1099, etc. and business write-offs etc.
i have a house, car, and stocks to worry about, but that's really it.

This reminds me of how they say that even if you equally distributed all the wealth in the US, the richest 10% would have 90% of it a few years later.

my tax return is pretty complicated, much moreso than filling out the 1040ez forms. My accountant charges about $300, and the amount I get back/have to pay depends largely on what has been going on with my investments. last year was not a good year 1/17/2008 2:18:30 PM |

I usually go the TurboTax route but I'm doing TaxAct online this year. I've actually had my return done for a few weeks now, just making sure I get all the documentation to back it up then I'll do the final submission in early Feb.

yeah, but if i can pay a CPA to do it, and get a positive profit from it, i'd rather just pay.
basically, im making sure i dont miss shit that could make my refund bigger.1/17/2008 2:21:00 PM |

should you set it up with your accountant to try and make sure you get the smallest refund possible (ie pay less to begin with). why give the gov't an interest free loan for a year? 1/17/2008 3:16:47 PM |

Don't do H&R Block...they are way expensive esp if you are wanting an early refund.

Free File when the IRS updates the ez-file site. H&R Block is not worth paying for, I went there and had someone do my taxes. I walked out......all she did was log into the website and enter in my information, which i could have done for free. 1/17/2008 6:55:58 PM |

bttt. Looking for some advice on how to prepare my taxes this year.
I've always used my father's CPA, but now that i'm on my own I don't think paying for his services will do me any better than the alternative. I don't really want to go to HRBlock, perhaps i'll try the free file thing from the government. 2/11/2008 7:39:52 PM |

My family has a CPA because of the farm and I started taking my taxes to him when older family members started to leave me a little money. (It was also helpful that he happened to be their CPA as well.) When married and I started my own business, we just found it easier to take our taxes to him. It costs us less than $200 for us and my business and our refund is always more than what we owe the CPA. 2/11/2008 8:17:58 PM |

Do it yourself in this situation it takes 10 minutes tops in this case, you can free file it, and the program will ask you the guestions so there is no work on your part. You will get your return in 5 to 12 business days via direct deposit. I got mine in 4 days last year.
Also if you have SECU they will do it for free in your case, they can also issue an immdeiate check for a small fee

For all you punters out there...having a Wester European mailing address means most of your foreign bets aren't taxed. This can mean tens of thousands if you bet enough.
