I mounted my 50" plasma on the wall the other day but I'm pretty OCD about exposed cables so I want to run the cables from the TV to the equipment inside the wall, just drill a hole up top, hole down low and drop the cables and grab them with a coat hanger. This shouldn't be a big deal except for the fact that I'm pretty sure there is a horizontal stud or sway-brace, fire-block, whatever you want to call it in my wall since it's a commercial structure. My question is does anyone know construction code well enough, or have enough experience with this, to know the height they typically put these braces at so I can make sure to drill the top hole for the cables below the horizontal stud?

^I've done that but the stud finder isn't 100% accurate (I had to drill 3 tiny holes about 1/2" apart to hit one of the studs for the mount because the finder was off by a few inches) and I just thought there might be some part of construction code that dictates the height of the horizontal stud so I could be sure on this one. This hole is going to have to be a good bit larger than the holes for the mount so I don't want to have to do it more than once and unlike the mount I'm not trying to hit a stud but rather get below one, I don't want to drill a 2" hole then find out I have to make another one because there's a horizontal stud 6" below my original hole.

As long as you make sure to put the mount into at least two studs it's just as safe on the wall as it is on a stand, if not safer (can't be knocked over), I can literally do pull ups on the wall mount and it doesn't even phase it

When I put mine on the wall it took four large bolts that went into the studs. Its funny you mention it because I was a bit skeptical so we did do pull ups on it and it never budged.

Made me happy. Never worried about it after that.

i figure it's worth mentioning, they make big long flexible drill bits for drilling holes through horizontal stud supports..........they don't weaken the structure either
