I like for my endings to resolve everything, although there can be a couple of unexplained things ala Pulp Fiction, provided they're handled right. I also like it if the ending causes me to think or is ironic/unexpected in some way. I suppose I prefer happy endings (not necessarily "and they all lived happily ever after," more like everybody gets their just reward in the end), but I do like to see depressing or downer endings every now and again to balance myself out. It's good to remind yourself from time to time that life is not always fair and that shitty things can and will happen for no logical reason.

I like my movie endings to fit with the tone of the film. If the film is "saying something" then I'd like the ending to punctuate that. I hate films that feel like "incomplete sentences." Two movies whose endings I really liked were Dr. Strangelove and Full Metal Jacket. These movies were both about, in part, absurdity of war. Full Metal Jacket punctuated this by ending with the soldiers walking away from a set of burning buildings singing the "Mickey Mouse Club" theme song. The ending to Dr. Strangelove is the iconic image of the pilot riding the atomic bomb out of the bomb bay backwards and waving his hat saying "yee-haw." While these endings wouldn't have excused failing to resolve plot arcs or character development, they were great because they served to punctuate what the films were ultimate saying.

Some directors have an obvious need to try to have "surprise endings." Maybe they thing they're just being clever, but a lot of times surprise endings come across as contrived. Exceptions to this are very wonderful things- it's nice when a movie can surprise you, make ultimate-sense, and also maybe say something important. The original planet of the apes is a good example of this. Really, the planet being earth was ultimately the only thing that made sense. Fight club is another good example of this (not necessarily a surprise, but was for most people) where Durden being a hallucinatory projection of the main character was the best explanation and also the most interesting. I would consider many of the films by M. Night Shamylan to be examples of how not to do a surprise ending. Surprise endings that require excessive suspension of disbelief or blindness during the first half of a movie are insulting to the audience and smack of arrogance. Aliens who are horribly burned by water choosing to invade earth (despite 2/3 ocean coverage, rain, humidity, DEW in cornfields, etc.) would be like us deciding to invade Venus without spacesuits.

There's nothing inherently wrong with leaving room for a sequel- provided you be careful of a few things. Leaving room for a sequel shouldn't take away from the ending. If destroying the monster or big bad whatever is an amazing and appropriate feeling of triumph, having its hand move right before the closing credits cheapens that. Also, giving blatant hints of a sequel in a movie that didn't deserve to be made in the first place is just silly. The planet of the apes remake and lost in space come to mind here. That being said some movies do those hints pretty well, but that has a lot to do with wanting to see another movie as well as how much a sequel would make sense. The joker card in the end of Batman Begins? That was great.

Hate to say I agree with DNL, but that's a pretty good summary. If a movie that you were otherwise really enjoying ends in a way that makes the experience something less then that's probably a bad ending. Better movies can get away with breaking "rules" more than shitty movies can, so it's hard to nail down anything definite. I guess the difference between a furstrating ending and a brilliantly innovative one is whether the creative people behind it are undeservedly arrogant or truly genius.

And FX actually advertises those shows, highlighting the fact that there are no heros and they are uncertain (like life).
