Sorry. Driving to/from work is not considered business miles. If you drive to a client's office you can write it off though.
I do contract IT work for a buddy's small business networking firm and he get's to write it off.

What kinda proof do I have to have for driving while at work? I have to use my personal car sometimes for work trips and such, for instance today I had to drive to the greensboro airport and back. I get to fill my tank up on the company dime as repayment, but other than that can I write that shit off or do I have to get some "receipt" everytime? 1/24/2008 3:57:19 PM |

well if your company pays for gas then you should be good to go.
or are you just talking about maintenance wise it puts more miles therefore your car depreciates quicker? 1/24/2008 4:07:51 PM |

Yeah gas is paid for, mileage isnt. Seeing as my drive to work is like 5 miles maybe, anytime I have to drive anywhere for the company its usually much more than my typical work commute. I have had entire weeks I had to drive out to RTP and back every day so it all adds up over time. 1/24/2008 4:12:51 PM |

if you do carpooling, you can get benefits. either free parking or partial gas reimbursement. 1/24/2008 4:29:48 PM |

Doss2k shouldn't have a problem claiming a deduction on mileage. If you don't do this already, you should start keeping a written record of the date, mileage, destination, purpose, etc.1/24/2008 4:47:53 PM |

You can deduct up to a certain amount if you pay for parking at yoru place of business, according to H&R Block's website.
I have a parking pass, but i don't have enough deductions to itemize, so it doesn't matter. 1/24/2008 5:22:53 PM |

might want to check the threshold for unreimbursed business expenses and how everything is classified that you think you did/didn't get paid for 1/24/2008 5:27:35 PM |

keep a written log of your starting and ending mileage for work related travel. If you ever get audited, you're going to need it. 1/24/2008 6:01:34 PM |

If I ever got audited Id probably be screwed lol. I dont keep receipts for much and dont really take many deductions either, but for things like how much did you donate you charity this year I usually just take a ballpark number and throw it down. Hell last year Im pretty sure I just threw a ballpark number on for how much in tuition I paid. 1/25/2008 8:43:57 AM |

using public transportation to go to and from work should be a tax write off to encourage mass transit use. 1/25/2008 10:36:13 AM |
