I mean, there's a 50% chance that next year's SOTU will be "Emperor Bush's 2009 State of The Empire Address." (not really, but they did try to look into legally cancelling elections in 2004).

P.S. At least we get to look at Darth Cheney for an hour and that hottie to his left

have you ever seen one of these before? It's always like that.

i just turned it on about 10 minutes ago. Is it me, or is Bush extra-smirky tonight? All but winking and giving thumbs up to the cronies in the front row?

this fiscal conservative talk is such bullshit. I love it how bush is like "send me a bill and i will veto it", and the same douchebags who send him the bills are the ones applauding that.

double federal support? that doesn't sound very fiscally conservative.

he's trying to have it both ways, you can't be a scientific leader when its so overwhelmed with his particular religion.

^^^^^ I felt the same way. haha. It did sound pretty unnatural coming out of his mouth.

The Republicans are being extra gay with their standing up and shit. Like they're standing up just when there's a policy difference between Dems and Reps and not when Bush actually has a good idea. That's bullshit. There was a really douchey shot where they were standing up glaring across the room at the Dems when the Dems didn't even really clap. There were like 6 guys in the middle of the camera giving the evil eye. It was super weak.

He also said in the same state that he opposes the buying and selling of people, that he opposes slavery, no way people will be caught not clapping for that.

He's done a good job of reducing civil liberties, and now he just asked congress to give retroactive immunity to any company that turned over private information to help the government spy on its citizens. The republicans all stood up and cheered while the democrats sat, some on the edge like Condie gave the democrats bad looks for not standing it looked like.

The Sept. 11 commission reported yesterday that it has found no "collaborative relationship" between Iraq and al Qaeda, challenging one of the Bush administration's main justifications for the war in Iraq.

[quote] Bin Laden Labels Saddam an Infidel - Jazeera TV
by Samia Nakhoul

DUBAI - A taped message believed to be from fugitive militant Osama bin Laden on Tuesday warned Arab nations against supporting a war against Iraq as threatened by the United States -- but branded Saddam Hussein an infidel.

Osama bin Laden
Osama bin Laden is seen in this April 1998 photo. The al-Jazeera Arab satellite station broadcast a new audio statement from bin Laden on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, in which he expresses solidarity with the Iraqi people but labels Saddam Hussein an 'infidel'. A broadcast editor at al-Jazeera said the tape appears to be authentic because the television station got it through the same means as previous bin Laden statements.(AP Photo/file)
In a broadcast coinciding with a major Muslim festival that prompted tight security in the United States and Britain to avert possible attacks, the man blamed for September 11 urged Muslims to fight America and repel any war against Iraq.

Quotes from Candidate Bush in Oct 2000....

Quote :
"(Somalia) Started off as a humanitarian mission and it changed into a nation-building mission, and that's where the mission went wrong. The mission was changed. And as a result, our nation paid a price. And so I don't think our troops ought to be used for what's called nation-building. I think our troops ought to be used to fight and win war. I think our troops ought to be used to help overthrow the dictator when it's in our best interests. But in this case it was a nation-building exercise, and same with Haiti. I wouldn't have supported either."

Quote :
"Let me comment on that. I'm not so sure the role of the United States is to go around the world and say this is the way it's got to be. We can help. And maybe it's just our difference in government, the way we view government. I want to empower the people. I want to help people help themselves, not have government tell people what to do. I just don't think it's the role of the United States to walk into a country and say, we do it this way, so should you."

Quote :
"Arab-Americans are racially profiled in what is called secret evidence. People are stopped, and we have to do something about that. My friend, Senator Spencer Abraham of Michigan, is pushing a law to make sure that Arab-Americans are treated with respect. So racial profiling isn't just an issue at local police forces"

Quote :
"I believe the federal government must say that if you receive any money, any money from the federal government for disadvantaged children, for example, you must show us whether or not the children are learning. And if they are, fine. And if they're not, there has to be a consequence."

Quote :
"He (Gore) believes only the right people ought to get tax relief. I believe everybody who pays taxes ought to get tax relief. "

Quote :
"I worry about morale in today's military. The warning signs are clear. It is time to have a new commander in chief who will rebuild the military, pay our men and women more, make sure they're housed better and have a focused mission for our military."

Quote :
"I don't believe, like the vice president does, in huge government. I believe in limited government."

Lackluster speech...was it just me or were there less anecdotes than usual? That's the best part of the SOTU.

Thumbs up to the shit on earmarks, though.

I think we (that is, the peanut gallery I was watching with) determined that there must have been a problem with the teleprompter...her awkward pauses and roving eyes seemed to suggest that something had gone wrong. I've seen Sebelius before and she was much better.

We also joked that she can give the exact same speech later this week when she endorses Barack Obama in Kansas.
