Mega Disasters Episode: Methane Explosion
Quote : | "A controversial scientific theory states that gigantic eruptions of methane gas from deep in the ocean have occurred regularly throughout history. Although a global-scale methane eruption today is highly unlikely, there may be stagnant, oxygen-poor basins in the ocean where methane might accumulate. Even a small explosion could cause a catastrophe. Imagine what would happen if such an event occurred in the mid-Pacific. Tsunamis would be generated in continuous waves, striking Hawaii and the entire West Coast. Coastal areas would be flooded for miles inland. Methane/water clouds would auto-ignite and the massive fires could cause widespread destruction. Consequences could be global. Whatever humanity survives would be thrown into a Dark Age." |

This one was a trip. And don't say something like this can't happen and hasn't happened--it can and it has.1/30/2008 12:11:38 PM |

The Co2 explosion they showed was freaky too. I couldn't imagine a lake blowing up and then cloud of Co2 covering entire villages. All the dead goats too.. 1/30/2008 12:22:05 PM |

the only doomsday prediction I subscribe to is the asteroid - it's gonna be a close one. 1/30/2008 12:25:37 PM |

^^^^ As usual, you think you know what you're talking about but you really don't:
Can Earth Dodge Asteroid Heading This Way?
Quote : | "Circle your calendar. April 13th, 2036 could be a really, really bad day on planet Earth.
A group of astronauts and engineers warns that an asteroid may pass uncomfortably close to Earth that day. The chances it will actually hit are just one in 45,000, but even at those odds, the scientists warn, the United Nations should consider a response [emphasis added]." |

1986: Hundreds gassed in Cameroon lake disaster
Quote : | "At least 1,200 people are feared dead in Cameroon, West Africa, after a cloud of lethal gas escaped from a volcanic lake.
The tragedy happened at Lake Nyos, about 200 miles (322 km) northwest of the capital, Yaoundé, during the night.
Most of the victims died in their sleep.
The gas killed all living things within a 15-mile (25km) radius of the lake, and the area is still highly contaminated." |

Did anyone see Last Days on Earth? It was a top-10 list of the things that could wipe out humanity. Pretty good, but it had slow parts. 1/30/2008 12:54:37 PM |

I was looking at the wiki for Lake Nyos, here's another creepy thing that happened after the Co2 escape from the lake
Quote : | "The normally blue waters of the lake turned a deep red after the outgassing, due to iron-rich water from the deep rising to the surface and being oxidised by the air. " |
