Quote : | "Oresnik took the 1991 Chevrolet Silverado to the Oil Ex-Change Quick Lube in Medford on Thursday for what he expects will be its last oil change and tuneup before hitting the magic number.
He said the truck is 1,200 miles from a million, and once he hits the mark he will retire the vehicle.
"I feel almost like the longtime NFL player as he goes into his last training camp knowing this is the end," Oresnik said.
He credits proper maintenance and a good measure of luck for allowing the truck to rack up so many miles. He said he's had more than 300 oil changes and tuneups at the Medford business, going in every 3,000 miles.
The truck has had four radiators, three gas tanks, five transmissions and six water pumps, but the engine has never been overhauled, Oresnik said.
He bought the Silverado in June 1996 after the original owner put 41,000 miles on it. Oresnik uses the vehicle to deliver seafood in three states, putting on about 85,000 miles a year." |

at first i thought, wow five transmissions, but one every 200k doesnt sound so bad. six water pumps is pretty impressive too, maybe its the fact that it is mostly highway miles so the engine is staying at a consistent rpm the majority of its life. 2/2/2008 4:30:29 PM |

AFAIK the car with the world record for most miles is a Volvo P1800 though. I think it's something ridiculous like 1.6 million. 2/4/2008 9:49:50 AM |

Considering I went through almost that many on my '91 Silverado in less than 200k, I'd say that is quite an accomplishment. I put a transmission in that piece every 50k.2/4/2008 11:11:49 AM |

The record-holding Volvo is still going strong, but my mileage was more than a little out of date--it's currently at 2,609,791 miles as of 1/26/08/ It's a 1966 P1800S that is, amazingly, still the guy's daily driver. Original engine (rebuilt once at 680K), original transmission. Absolutely remarkable.

What's equally impressive is that the car passed the 1 million mark in 1987. So it's racked up the majority of its mileage between the ages of 20 and 41....

Actually found an even better article as it's mostly quotes from the owner himself.

Along with going over 2 million miles since the one and only engine rebuild, the car is on the original transmission, only the 3rd gear synchro having been replaced. The guy does sound like he is a LOT more careful of a driver than most folks, but you don't get to 2.6 mil by ragging on the car, obviously.
And while Saab didn't do anything for the guy with the million mile 900, Volvo has been very kind to Mr. Gordon wrt the good publicity his car provides for them. They gave him a new car (780 Bertone) in '87 when he hit 1 million, and then another (C70 coupe) in 2002 when he hit 2 million. He says if he's alive to see 3 million in the P1800 he might retire it then...maybe... Not bad at all. 2/4/2008 1:07:10 PM |
