"Mississippi Pols Seek To Ban Fats
New bill would make it illegal for restaurants to serve the obese
FEBRUARY 1--Mississippi legislators this week introduced a bill that would make it illegal for state-licensed restaurants to serve obese patrons. Bill No. 282, a copy of which you'll find below, is the brainchild of three members of the state's House of Representatives, Republicans W. T. Mayhall, Jr. and John Read, and Democrat Bobby Shows. The bill, which is likely dead on arrival, proposes that the state's Department of Health establish weight criteria after consultation with Mississippi's Council on Obesity. It does not detail what penalties an eatery would face if its grub was served to someone with an excessive body mass index.

"An act to prohibit certain food establishments from serving food to any person who is obese, based on criteria prescribed by the state department of health..."
"

As they say, probably won't pass. But just the nerve of today's politicians thinking the gov't should have control over so much of our lives.

once taxes back all health care, the government will have a financial mandate to limit unhealthy civil liberties

that'd kill the restaurant business b.c isn't MS the most obese state in the nation. I'm pretty discussed with America's obesity problem but this is pretty extreme.

First off

If you're fat, you remain fat and you drain the health system.

The trillions spent on health is because of your fat fucking ass and inability to control yourself. If you were a true libertarian and conservative, you'd actually want government banning fat people from making their situation even worse then it is because they put a massive strain on all other resources.

Secondly, this has nothing to do with universal healthcare, which only a retard wouldn't want because he somehow equates government healthcare with a slippery slope to full blown socialism.

Spoken like a true fascist fuck. GG, SandSanta, your true colors come out at last.

How about this - you can stuff your face until your arteries harden over, and we'll just not pay for your healthcare. It's like a win-win!

Do you even know what 'libertarian' means?

True libertarians believe in personal responsibility. Libertarians believe in freedom of choice, and as little regulation and government intervention as possible. They don't believe that a fat person should put a "massive strain on all other resources", because government resources such as state-provided health care shouldn't even be allocated to said fat person. They DON'T believe in the government banning people from making choices about what they eat, among other things. How the fuck you could come to that conclusion is beyond me.

What a fucking stupid post, SandSanta. Troll somewhere else.

and if I hear "get information out" one more fucking time...

we know we need to eat less and exercise more

fat people affect YOUR bottom line through increased health care costs...

until we start thinking progressively and stop with the "OMG, I HATE FATTIES, WHY CAN'T THEY FIX THEMSELVES" rhetoric the problem will never get better

where do you draw the line?? Would their be a BMI index threshold for when the gov't intervened. I do think you should be charged a surplus on health insurance for being obese. If i have to pay more for auto insurance b.c i'm irresponsible (speeding, having wrecks, running stop signs) then fat people should have to pay more for health insurance for being irresponsible (not exercising, gluttonous with food, unhealthy dies).

i wanted to puke last time i went to Bada Wings and two morbidly obese women were chomping down on two chicken sandwiches a piece, a full basket of fries, and their fat children were chiefing down also. I've heard the whole chemical imbalance thing but when you are eating that much then their is no excuse.

you are an idiot. this has nothing to do with taxes. how do you think health insurance companies make a profit while insuring lots of fat people. They pass the costs onto you or your employer depending on who pays your insurance. Basically every health active adult who is insured helps subsidize the medical bills for those who choose to live a fat lifestyle. People may not be able to help getting cancer, really sick, or some other serious disease. However, people have a choice to not exercise or get the triple thickbaconburger with the SUPEr sized fries from hardees.

Get rid of flat health care costs. Let employers charge a fat premium on their lager employees to compensate to the increased costs. In short, let those who are making destructive choices pay for their destructiveness.

It's very refreshing to see so many people who still want limits on gov't power over our lives.

As 1337 b4k4 said...let private insurance companies handle the fatties in the free market. We have to learn to stop running to daddy gov't with every problem...for we risk handing over more and more of our freedom.

^ agreed on letting insurers force those that are overweight to pay more insurance. Smoking cigarettes already effects insurance premiums. Funny thing is the smoking rate is higher in Japan then america, however, people in japan on avg. live LONGER where the obesity rate is a LOT lower also.

yeah i find this ridiculous. no one is making Fatts McGee go to mcdonalds to scarf down on 3 big-mac's for lunch. This is just another example of Americans not taking responsibility for their own decisions. N o one made them go thru the McD's drive through. I take the same stance on tobacco, alcohol, and guns. Everyone knows tobaccos is unhealthy and addicting. If you decide to smoke a pack/day then develop lung cancer its your own damn fault.

on that note time for a smoke

^I agree frog.

Ive always wondered how long before one of these fat lawsuits vs mcdonalds won. Then Mcds would refuse service just like a bartender has too. "Im sorry sir, it looks like you've had a few 10 too many". Then McDs gets sued for discrimination.

I never imagined they would make a law to do that first. I also think if the law passes, which it wont, it might make it easier to sue McDs.

For those argueing that if we do get socialized medicine this should be a law. If you feel that strongly about it, why not move to ban overweight medicaid receipts from doing it now? You are paying for them.

seriously though, smoking does decrease life expectancy.

However... obesity does so more. And Japan is far skinny enough to make up for a few cigarettes a day.

All universal health care proposals need work, and I think what people have been saying in this thread represents a lot of what most of America is thinking.

If I were running for president, I would in all seriousness propose:

1. Tax on saturated fat and high fructose corn syrup. However, keep the scientific burden large and independent - no misleading the public by industry as we seem to see with global warming.
2. Allow the employers and health care provider to put in incentives that very clearly equal cold hard cash for being in better physical shape. Epically for overweight people. Put America on a goddamn diet.
3. GET THE FUCKING SOFT DRINKS OUT OF OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS! Yeah, it's difficult for the national government to do something about this, but we need leadership here.

look at obesity rates for grade schoolers compared to how those people turn out. It's momentum, it really is an obesity epidemic.

That said, yeah PE is vital - absolutely vital, inseparable from a good diet.

Actually thats right.

In a libertarian government you wouldn't have services worth a shit of any kind, including health care.

Fat people wouldn't even qualify for private health care and an even greater number of American citizens would suffer.

Seriously, the last thing you want to do is argue the merit of libertarian views with me.

I personally don't want to work hard every week to subsidize other people's medical issues in a State Sponsored Health Care system. Unexpected diseases, cancer, and other disorders are one thing. However, people actively choose to gorge themselves on fatty food, not exercise, smoke, or any other unhealthy lifestyle choice. Thus when they have health issues i have to help cover their intrinsic cost.

My solution to healthcare:
- tort reform
- re-evaluate the prescription drug market
- at best mandating employers give full-time employees health care insurance option; at worst provide a subsidies for working poor to get their own
- subsidized prescriptions for the elderly
- making health insurance like auto insurance where lifestyle risky behavior (i.e. obesity) increases your premiums (maybe your employer charges you a surcharge if its provided by them)
- eliminate health insurance coverage for shit like viagra and other lifestyle drugs/procedures.

Just like people who have 6 tickets in two years and have flipped and totaled two cars within that same time can't get car insurance right?

The can they just have to pay more for it. Insurance is risk pooling, and if you are a greater risk, you pay a larger chunk off the pool.

Yea, they can get some shit car insurance like Geico indemnity and pay premiums bordering on 1000% more then regular making a civic cost 3000$ per six months to insure. But thats car insurance, and that operates differently then health insurance.

Apply for health insurance and tell them you've had cancer. See if you get approved.

Its risk pooling for profit. There's a massive difference there that I pray to God I don't have to explain.
