Heard that if you call 911 and the ems comes out and all they did was check your vitals, you will receive a bill. Anyone know if this is true??

I worked for Cary EMS for a few years, and they have the same protocols and medical director as wake Co. So - no, you will not receive a bill if all they did was check your vitals. But if they gave you any sort of treatment (such as a respiratory treatment or did an IV to give you glucose for low blood sugar, etc.) and then you refused to be transported, then I believe you get a bill for the treatment. Of course, i don't know if anything has changed since i left last summer, but i highly doubt it.

^^Did you give them your insurance information, full name etc.?
If not then you certainly will not, if so then my guess is probably. 2/9/2008 9:25:55 AM |

ms. drohan is indeed correct, as always
treatment + transport = bill treatment + no transport = a smaller bill no treatment + no transport = no bill
of course we will always recommend that you go to the hospital (because that is where you receive definitive care), but you always have the right to refuse transport and/or treatment.] 2/9/2008 9:35:31 AM |

sure, why not? i've seen them do it but personally i'd let ems come on just so the responsibility would be on them!

we can cancel ems... but rarely do, esp if there's something to it... i'm saying if we do all the vitals, give albuterol, or oral glucose, etc... and you guys just like look at em and they refuse transport... sure there's no billing....
FD FTW...
2 minutes... geeze must only be to district 2... haha although i admit it's getting better now with avl... 2/9/2008 11:26:53 AM |

if they put a pillow around your ankle and let you SHARE an ambulance with your dad(who the ambulance was called for anyway...anaphylaxis) they will bill you in full

They had to call the ambulance on me when I was in High School (In Raleigh)...and we were never charged anything, b/c by the time the got there everything got better and it was more of a scare than anything. 2/9/2008 9:39:51 PM |

^^ You are going to be charged for an ambulance ride, pillow around the ankle or not. If a family member is being transported, someone can often ride along, but it's not like medical care is Buy One Get One Free. You were a patient.
P.S. to Ms. Shanndro --- Scott Hardison! ahahaha it never gets old!

i'm registered for the mcat may 31st, i figured i'd take it early so i can take it again before i apply if i completely bomb it, haha. 2/10/2008 4:39:45 PM |

its after the 2nd year, and the step 2 knowledge and skills is after 3rd year i believe (i can't get too ahead of myself haha). Unfortunately step 1 is not just diagnosis/treatment stuff...its biochem, path, pharm, micro, genetics, immunology, etc. Fun stuff, i can't wait *sarcasm*
evan - that's great! was it a full length practice? remember, endurance is one of the main problems for that test. oh wait, i forget its on the computer now....you got lucky, mine was ~7 hours! 2/10/2008 8:18:59 PM |
