All my professors this semester have endless amounts of notes/pp slides online they want us to print off. It's a complete waste of ink and it seems like a b/w laser printer would pay for itself pretty quickly if you consider all the ink cartridges I buy.

Any recommendations on good b/w laser printers in the 100-200$ range? I don't need an "all-in-one" because my HP ink printer has a copier/scanner in it. Just looking for a simple b/w laser printer for notes and stuff like that. Should i just go to bestbuy and look at any deals? Or try to order something online? I've never really shopped for printers before. Would someplace like newegg be THAT much cheaper than bestbuy?

^yeah but you get a lot more use out of a toner cartridge than an ink cartridge right? Like by a lot.

I had that small Samsung one for the longest time until replacing it with an MFC. I did a ridiculous amount of printing on it and only purchased one toner for $30 during the course of owning it. I would look online you do not even have to spend $100.

^^Inkjet printers cost at LEAST 3x the cost of a Laserjet printer in operational costs.

For example:

Typical toner cartridge - $50-$60
Page yield - 2,000-3,000 pages
Average cost per page - 2-2.5 cents per page

Typical inkjet cartridge - $30-$50
Page yield - 400-500 pages
Average cost per page - 8-10 cents per page

It doesn't help much that inkjet ink is one of the most expensive fluids on the planet either...

Dell 1720dn

It's networkable and prints double-sided.

I can vouch for the cheap samsung and hp laserjets. Had an HP 4L for about 7 years and it worked pretty well. My samsung ML-1710 was 80 bucks 5 years ago at sams club and I've only had to buy 2 cartridges for it (refills for 30 bucks each.) This is with me printing off the entire course notes for multiple classes for myself and my roommate.

Check NCSU surplus. That's were a lot of the printers that get resold on TWW come from.

If I were you, I'd go with a used workgroup-class HP laser. Rugged, reliable, and if you're picky you can find one with a duplexer. Shipping might be a bitch on ebay, but you can find good working lasers at Surplus from time to time, or just check with fregac or garfus99 and see if they have any in stock at the moment. For what you want to do, I'd recommend:

4000 series (4000/4050/4100 n, tn, dtn - "d" models do 2-sided printing)
2100/2200 series (identical except that the 2200 has a duplexer)
5 series (5, 5m, 5n - bulletproof, predecessor to the 4000 series)
5L/6L series (older but solid, predecessor to the 2100 series)

Very solid, economical printers, networkable, may have duplexers, and will probably last you longer than a new "bargain/personal" laser.

Got this from bestbuy for 99$:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8517875&st=p1006&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1186006604466

It's exactly what i need, and it prints really fast compared to my old ink printer.

excellent choice. HP easily makes the best laser printers in that price range (probably all ranges), and it sounds like u got a good deal. order refills off of ebay or get them at cartridge world.

dont forget tho, we need your help http://message_topic.aspx?topic=118820

i love my brother mfc-7820n all-in-one (networked printer, copier, scanner, fax)

toner is cheap, it's fast, and it does all i could want it to do (though i've never used the fax function)...i know you said you didn't need the other functions, but i (personally) hate having so many devices taking up unnecessary space when an all-in-one will do the trick with a smaller footprint

they consistently go on sale for ~$150

I have an older HP "all-in-one" for if i need to scan/copy anything, and if i need to print color/photo prints.

^I was looking at that at bestbuy, but decided i'd STILL need to keep my old printer out for color prints/photos, so i might as well get a small laser printer, and keep my old printer for everything else.

^ yeah...i debated it and finally decided that i do so little in the way of color printing that it wasn't necessary...and now that i have a color laser in my office, i think i'm set

Ok running into some trouble. It started out working great, but now it only prints 1-2 pages. Like i'll tell it to print 9 or however many but it'll only print 1 or 2 pages.

I'll bring up the printer queue and the job will just sit there for about 2 minutes after the printer prints 1-2 pages, then it'll go away.

Any ideas? Would installing 2 different HP printer drivers cause this? I did some googling but couldn't really find any people who have run into the issue of a printer only printing the first 2 pages you tell it to.

-This is really pissing me off. I can tell it to print 1, then 2, then 3, then 4 as different jobs and it'll print them, but if i tell it to print 1-9 it stops after printing 1 and 2. Already reinstalled drivers etc etc. Anything else before i take it back?

Ok now it randomally printed 5 pages, instead of 2. Tried again and went back to only printing 2. Seems like a software issues but i've reinstalled the drivers a couple times...
