basically we found one of these chrome shelves at lowes for 15 bucks. Will this let off toxins if it sits over a fire pit?

if you burn the chrome off, its just steel.
its just like any other grate on a grill..
but its not worth your time trying to burn all that chrome plating off. 2/9/2008 6:22:32 PM |

does it have to have legs? you can buy grates by themselves from lowes/home depot probably walmart. 2/9/2008 6:24:37 PM |

^that's what we did. None of the grates were large enough at lowes.
I'm only asking if the chrome finish is toxic and if so, how long it would take to burn off.

Quote : | "The ARB is also investigating emissions of nickel from nickel plating. Nickel plating is an integral part of the decorative chrome plating process and is applied prior to the chromium layer. The electrical charge applied to nickel plating baths may potentially result in emissions of nickel. The Board identified nickel compounds as toxic air contaminants (TACs) in 1991, concluding that nickel and nickel compounds are carcinogens for which there is no identifiable safe exposure level. For more information on the health effects related to exposure to hexavalent chromium or nickel compounds, please click here." |
i mean, you could tell when its burning off, but not sure how long it would take.2/9/2008 6:31:43 PM |
