more like who doesn't efile, unless you have a really really complicated situation

1) it's free if you make under like 55k
2) if you make more it's still really cheap
3) most of the websites are prepared for common/and many detailed tax questions
4) more importantly the irs gets and approves your return in like 48 hours and you get your return in 5 to 12 days if you opt for direct deposit.

I know to many of my friends who can file a 1040ez who go get it done somewhere, also a lot of people I know who have simple stuff like stock sales, education stuff go somewhere. It took me no longer then 20 minutes once you have all your documents.

I have never not E-filed, and I have been paying taxes on my own for like 11 years now. It's really easy. I recommend Turbo Tax.

I got married in March so I have never filed while married before.

We both have full time jobs and I do some work on the side that I get 1099'ed for and have a lot of deductions. My though is that we should file separately since I can itemize so much and she cannot.

Any opinions?

While you will probably get some answers in here, i sugest you either go talk to an accountant type to do your taxes, or invest in some software like turbo tax.

If you go the software route, you can try filing both ways and see which gives you the bigger refund.

my taxes always seem to be complicated

in 2006 i had 3 corporate moves and 2007 i had one but i have some random piece of tax info i got from the state of kansas.

plus i owe a lot of money this year so i dont want to fuck it up, definitely worth it to pay someone due to my situation

^^^If you file seperately, you both have to itemize. Not one or the other. Sorry. I'm in the same boat, sucks to be you. Especially if you weren't taxed enough.

Some states will let you file for free. Check your state's comptroller / internal revenue website to see if they offer it.

I did my girlfriend's taxes this year, used TurboTax to crunch all the numbers. TurboTax/Intuit charges $18 per return, so I used http://www.taxbrain.com to e-file. It's usually $20 for federal, but you can use coupon code TUW82 for a $10 discount.

I get mine professionally done mainly because some investments, funds, and other stuff is beyond my ability and desire to understand tax law.

^^don't have that luxury. My father has his professionally prepared by a CPA due to all of the investments and company ownerships he has.

I think I'm gonna use the free turbotax program. I qualify for free fed and state this year and i trust the turbotax name a little more over something like 123eztaxUSA.com or something like that.

you know

the way he worded this makes it sound like his only reason for filing would be to hop into the government giveaway happening this summer.

the program I used for years while married gave you the option of lookin at your return if you filed together or if you did it apart. Every year it was better to do it together because of all the tax breaks and stuff you get. If you do your own i bet it would allow you to check for that too.

You still need to file Married Filing Jointly. Its the best filing status by far. You will file a schedule C for your 1099 income and be able to right off all of your expenses. Commuting expenses, however, are not deductible. I suggest that you dont use Turbo Tax to do your return, their schedule C is retarted, especially if you have to add any assets into the return.

There are going to be over 30 million Americans filing this year just to get the rebate. To get the rebate you have to file.

That doesn't make sense. When you're married, you lump both salaries together and file as one financial entity. Either you can itemize or you can't.

It's very rare that filing jointly is a disadvantage to filing separately. With the self-employed situation, the only downside to filing jointly is that if you fudge your tax return and you get caught, both you and your spouse are liable. So basically if you're planning on being shady with your tax return, file separately.

I gave turbotax a go this year.

It said I was getting back $34; HR Block (I've used them since 03) estimated $313.

I don't know which is wrong, and I can't figure out where they might have differed in their calculations

^that's crap that i'm weary about when it comes to the free software. did you use HRblock's web program?

i'm thinking about paying the 16.95 for the premium taxACT just to make sure i'm completely covered.

^^ I've always got more back with HR block than with turbotax. I've never been able to figure out why, but I just use the HR block one now.

gah went through and did the turbotax and taxact tonight.

i had almost 300 dollar bucks more on the turbotax version. I hate inconsistencies on stuff like that.

I have a couple questions. Say my dad had an account in my name for my college education. Since he can't claim me, can I claim the tuition payment on my tax return?

and secondly if I got a new car but didn't write the check, yet the sales receipt and everything else is in my name can i claim the sales tax on that purchase?

for the second question, as long as the wake county (or whatever county you're in) records have you as the owner, you can claim it. if it is wake county, you can check this at wakegov.com

I always hear people talking about paying 300 bucks to get their taxes done. These are dumb kids in their early twenties, I'm guessing they don't have any complicated tax situations.

It astounds me how much money can be made from stupid people.
