epic high fives are cool.

just get an alarm clock that was made for a deaf person, they use the light switchin off and on to wake them up. (its what I heard anyways).

Record a clapping sound on your phone set it as your alarm, get the clapper for your room.

i think lights on lights off lights on lights off would get me up in a hurry especially with a clapping noise too.

you could probably use some X10 lamp modules for this

I got one of those "gentle wake" alarm clocks for Christmas:

and FYI, its not so much a gentle light, its more like a strobe light and its very annoying. It doesn't make getting up any easier.

yeah, you can.. they make a module that basically screws into your light bulb socket and the bulb screws into it, remote controlled and can be set on a timer easily... I've got it in my room but I get pissed at bright lights in the morning and won't get up so don't use it for that. It's nice though to hit a button to turn off the overhead and turn on my lamp beside the bed and hit another one to turn the lamp off instead of trying to reach the lamp

I randomly got this one for Christmas

The light/"natural sound" sometimes wakes me up before the actual alarm. But no matter how many scent things I put in it, I never smell nothing

I had to housesit for a deaf person once, and their alarm went off. It was insane. Lights flashing on and off, and their bed was rumbling like crazy. I recommend getting a deaf person alarm.

is there a way to pre-set bringing the lights up slowly?

does X10 have a programmable dimmer feature?

Yes, mine does anyways... I'm not sure about bringing them up slowly but I would venture to say it's possible

I really, really want a Clocky, but I think it would just get stuck in the rug I have next to my bed.

shouldn't be too hard

open your alarm clock

solder some extra leads to the off button (shouldn't affect the resistance too much i don't think)

make them go to an x10 relay

install an x10 dimmer switch in place of your existing light switch

set the x10 relay to send an ON signal to the light switch every time the relay is triggered

in fact... i like this idea, i might do it myself...
