Had his throat cut by a skate. Glad he's still alive.

I was surprised he had the awareness to hold his neck and get over to the bench so quickly. Glad he's in stable condition.

good to hear he is doing ok

i am honestly surprised that this doesn't happen more often, at least bad cuts from skates (not necessarily the neck), than it does. esp. with all of the pile-ups that happen around the nets and things like that

search "hockey throat" on youtube and watch the one where the goalie gets his throat slit by the skate

there wasn't a trail of blood, just a pool

in that instance the guy didnt get up and try to get off the ice immediately though

they had stablized the goalie and awaited a stretcher to get to him as opposed to what happened last night

scary shit all around though

If this happens in a local beer league, or anywhere outside of the pros, the guy dies on the ice. Crazy shit.

I thought the same exact thing because when I saw the vid I was working the booth during a beer league game.

I just can't bring myself to wear a neck guard, though. It makes me feel constricted and then I get claustrophobic.

It was just luck. Malarchuk wasn't stabilized, he just happened to stick his finger right into the hole in his jugular and stop the bleeding. The paramedics were at his end of the rink and immediately told him not to move his hand...if they'd been at the other end of the rink and he had pulled it out before they arrived, he would've bled out in the crease.

I think stabilized wasnt the word i was going for there

he was far from stable, and not immobilized either

just more instructed to wait where he was laying as opposed to skating off

I can't believe the guy got up and SKATED to the bench? You'd think that all that blood loss would result in him passing out immediately.

Good thing he's ok.

It was his corroded artery, which is a much bigger deal than the jugular vein.

^^^^Sorry, I'm retarded.

The first time I saw the accident with Malarchuk, it creeped me the fuck out. I don't really follow hockey , but shouldn't this happen more often? Do most players wear throat guards now?

^^ general trend: people will only wear the gear they are required to. Less gear means lighter means faster means more comfortable you might make a play you wouldnt otherwise have made.

given my situation, i'd rather have a little extra protection and not have to fear that injury. then again, i'm not a professional hockey player.

to a degree, but throat protectors are typically pretty cumbersome. Great for a goalie, but for someone who has to look over their shoulder more often, throat protectors can get in the way

yeah, i definitely agree there. i would only wear one in goal too, i thought that's what we were talking about.

there is the opportunity for that kind of injury to happen to anyone, but to your point, if i were anywhere on the ice other than in goal, a neck guard would be way too prohibitive.

I know a few hundred adult hockey players, and only one skater wears a neck guard. I know two goalies who wear the type that would actually prevent a skate cut, but most (including me) only wear the lexan type that protects against pucks.

A long time ago, I was covering a puck and a stick got lifted up under my neck and cut me. It was nothing like a skate cut, but I tried wearing a neck guard for a little while and couldn't deal with it. My dad is still pissed that I refuse to wear one; he called me to complain about it again immediately after the Zednik thing happened.

Other than maybe a dozen goalies, I don't know anyone in the NHL who wears a cut-proof neck guard.

when I was growing up, neckguards were mandatory
the technology got to a point where you could barely notice they were on due to the lack of weight

"Panthers' Zednik may be discharged in 48 to 72 hours

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. -- With Richard Zednik on their top line, the Florida Panthers faced an uphill battle just to make the playoffs.

Without him, they vow to fight harder.

Zednik continued what some termed a remarkable recovery Tuesday, when his condition was upgraded to good and he was moved out of the intensive care unit at Buffalo General Hospital. That was just two days after teammate Olli Jokinen's skate blade sliced into Zednik's forward's neck during a play in the corner, when Jokinen was upended. The blade cut Zednik's carotid artery and stopping just shy of his jugular vein.

On Wednesday, the Panthers will play their first game since the accident, hosting the Montreal Canadiens.

Panthers coach Jacques Martin said after the morning skate that he hadn't had a chance to talk with Zednik on Wednesday, but trainer Dave Zenobi had.

According to the Panthers, more than 15,000 fans have left e-mail messages on the team's Web site. The team is also setting up an oversized get-well banner for fans to sign, which will be delivered to the Zedniks' home in western Broward County.

Early in the afternoon, the hospital released a statement from Richard Zednik's wife, Jessica: "On behalf of Richard and our entire family, I want to thank the fans, his teammates, the Panthers and Sabres organizations, plus so many others for their prayers and well wishes.

"I especially want to thank the medical staff involved in his care and the Buffalo General Hospital for their tremendous support during this difficult time. Richard continues to improve and we are encouraged each day. We thank you for respecting our privacy and would ask everyone to continue to keep Richard in their thoughts over the next few days."

According to the hospital, Dr. Sonya Noor, Zednik's attending surgeon, said Zednik continues to improve and should be discharged during the next 48 to 72 hours.

Noor said Jessica Zednik's sisters are also at the hospital, and Zednik has been speaking with his 4-year-old daughter at least twice a day.

On Tuesday, during a news conference, Noor said Zednik had already asked about when he could return to training. She's recommending Zednik refrain from strenuous activity for three months and that returning to the ice would be a possibility next season.

"I think he will come back someday and play, if that's what he chooses to do," Noor said.

Noor also cautioned that Zednik's return to the ice would be determined partly by his state of mind. She said hospital officials have talked to Zednik about seeking psychiatric counseling once he returns to Florida.

"I'm not an expert. I don't even want to claim to be something like a shrink, but in my experience with any kind of post-traumatic stress, it's what he will go through, and I think he needs to be evaluated and followed strictly for that," said Noor, adding that Zednik has been in good spirits.

The Panthers were also without center Stephen Weiss for their game Wednesday night against the Canadiens.

Weiss has been battling the flu for the past few days, Martin said, and his absence forced Florida -- which was missing two of its top five scorers Wednesday -- to further juggle its lines.

Rookie left winger Stefan Meyer was called up from Rochester on Wednesday to replace Weiss, whose availability for Florida's game with Washington on Friday night is unknown.

Weiss has 10 goals and 23 assists this season. Zednik had 15 goals and 11 assists, including six goals in his previous five games before the injury.
