It's not your elementary school's fault that you don't know how to spell "cello." 2/17/2008 11:19:21 AM |

People that are so good with spelling tend to forget that those of us that aren't good at spelling really can't help it. All this did was remind me that I need to recheck dictionary.com everytime I spell out a word. Not being able to spell doesn't mean you are not intelligent it just means that you have a different mindset than good spellers. 2/17/2008 11:26:08 AM |

Eh, I don't really care that much...I'm used to be a bad speller. I never had any hope during the spelling bees and I would often get out in the first round. People would look at me like I'm stupid, but it's not my fault. When I say the word cello how do I say it? I say it with the CH sound at the beginning. Therefore, why isn't there at CH in the word? I dunno, because the english language is not consistant. I think I understand how to spell and then I get another word thrown at me.
For instance why isn't segue spelt like saygway, that's how you say the word. I mean how am I supposed to look up the word in the dictionary if I didn't know how to spell it? I can't just sound it out looking for it. I would look under CH forever in the dictionary and be really confused as to why I can't find chello. I would be looking under SAY and wonder if I'm even using a word in the english language when I can't find saygway to make sure I'm spelling it right. 2/17/2008 11:44:01 AM |

1. It's Italian. We like musical loanwords. 2. You don't pronounce it like "saygway."

if you consider yourself at all intelligent, there is no excuse for bad spelling. the only skill required is memorization. if you can memorize other things, you should be able to memorize the correct sequence of letters to form a word, regardless of the pronunciation. otherwise, your stupid.

If it is a word that I have never heard or seen before, or one that I've only come across a few times in my life I should automatically have it memorized? Gee, I guess I am stupid. If only I had the dictionary read to me as a child every day of my life.
And yes, cello is one of those words. I don't play the cello, I have never been part of an orchestra, the only string instrument I play it the guitar. I rarely ever talk about cellos, much less write the word out. Therefore, why should I have the word memorized? I don't, so I spelt it the way it sounded to me. Obviously it was wrong, but imo, I felt that it was an easy enough word that I spelt it right and I didn't have to look it up in the dictionary. Yes again, I was wrong. But that doesn't make me any less intelligent.
How do those kids in the national spelling bee spell those words they've never seen before in their lives? I don't think it's memorization of the words they just understand how words are formed. That's why they ask for the orgin of the word, or the use of it in a sentence. They use that to spell words they have never seen before in their live. 2/17/2008 12:35:32 PM |

We're talking about "cello."
Not "onomatopoeia."
Not "schadenfreude."
"Cello."
As for the kids at the national bee, they're working mostly off memorized etymology, not sounding it out. ] 2/17/2008 12:47:43 PM |

Okay, you're right, I am stupid for putting an H into the word Cello, that totally sounds like it it supposed to have an H in it. Now I must go do my retard dance in the corner. 2/17/2008 12:49:28 PM |

Just out of curiosity, did you go to one of those schools where they didn't correct your spelling if what you wrote matched the sounds?
My mom taught first grade for a long time, and she occasionally had to deal with kids who had come from school districts that allowed "creative spelling." ] 2/17/2008 12:51:11 PM |

spelling ability is not random. of course some of it is memorization, but it's much more a function of your history of READING than it is your genetic predisposition. Spelling bees and SATs and such tests don't test whether or not you've seen and memorized every word out there, they test your familiarity with your language as a whole and your ability to parse sounds into alphabetic relationships.
