yes
I recycle the most of anyone I've ever met
I even recycle my empty toilet paper tubes
I wish I could go around ticketing people for not recycling
I'd even do it pro bono 2/17/2008 3:33:00 PM |

I hate that we get those tiny green containers. Mine are filled up a day after pickup, and i have two more tubs that i put out every tuesday.
In greensboro, they provide recycling containers that are as big as the green trashcans (just like what we in raleigh) 2/17/2008 3:35:00 PM |

^^ not to mention greensboro has had those cans since the early 90's
and they allow more types of recyclables in them

I use two, and I live by myself
also, I requested a smaller raleigh-issued trash can, and have never even filled it halfway 2/17/2008 3:44:53 PM |

the only recycling they have in my BFE-town is glass. probably why the roadsides look like shit. and no, there isnt any local trash pick-up either.
this is life in a town of like 50 people. 2/17/2008 4:23:53 PM |

in the city i live in, they have barcodes on your recycling trash cans, which are full size and supplied by the city.
they scan the cans on the way into the truck, and the truck weighs the cans.
you can track your weight online, and you get gift certificates through the website where every x number of lbs = $x.
it's pretty awesome 2/17/2008 4:28:28 PM |

^ that is so close to my dreams it's scary
raleigh needs that -- that is fucking awesome
(although, it would tend to reward glass over aluminum, and [per unit] aluminum is easier to recycle)
^^ If I were in your situation, I would view having so few people as making it easier to persuade them all to get on board
just have a couple bbqs and prepare some inspirational speech (you can make it seem unscripted, if you want)
then bring some fresh jam to those that didn't show up, and talk it over with them
make it a summer project
(the worst thing that could happen is you piss off some right-wing nut and get murdered....wait... ) 2/17/2008 5:26:23 PM |

as of recently, raleigh curbside recycling can take
gable-top cartons (including the ones with plastic spouts)
and
aseptic cartons 2/17/2008 5:52:18 PM |

i dont recycle b/c im lazy, but when talking to tree-huggers i tell them its b/c recycling isnt efficient enough & thus forces it to become subsidized by the govt, which i find to be a waste of money 2/17/2008 6:09:52 PM |

When I first got my own place I recycled for a few weeks. After spilling the nasty ass disgusting beer water out of the recycling bin on in my shoes and flip flops I said fuck that.
Back in those days the bottle and can output of my house was about 50 times what it is now. 2/17/2008 6:16:51 PM |

I recycle... a lot. Something clicked about 6 months ago & I started recycling profusely. I'm up to ~2-3 bins/wk.

I was under the impression that recycling cardboard tp/paper towel tubes was fairly common.

you're a fucking douchebag. and i have no problem saying that. It's people with apathetic bullshit attitudes like yours towards the environment that just worsen the situation.
like the drought --- my roommate in the dorms last year took forever in the shower for no reason at all and i voiced my concern to her and she was just like "well, my parents have already paid for it so i might as well use it."
it's not a money issue, idiot. They charge you taxes for landfills to encourage people to recycle so they will minimize the amount of trash that gets sent to the overflowing landfills.

It costs MORE and is LESS environmentally friendly to recycle paper into more paper than it is to use new trees to make new paper.

Ivy Commons doesn't have recycling facilities either, so I just take mine over to avery close (next complex over). I fill up different bags for each type of recyclable material and when one gets full, i walk over there. 2/21/2008 12:02:51 AM |

^^sometimes that is the case. I'm just furious with people's attitudes towards this shit. It's like, they'll keep using and wasting and consuming until one day when they go to turn on the faucet and nothing comes out.
only then will SOME PEOPLE truly understand the severity of the issue. 2/21/2008 12:04:35 AM |

we learned all this junk in WPS201
in 1980 somethin Clinton had a mandate that required all government offices to recycle their office recyclables. It was a good idea but it cost soo much money and had such little benefits that it became useless....
reasons:
there are alot but i'll list some big ones
1) In recycled paper, there is a vast % content of fillers, coatings, ink (big problem), foreign objects (staples, paperclips, etc etc that need to be removed) that is all very capital intensive to remove.
problems that arise of this include damage to pulping equipment (even more money and they're inevitable)
2) in virgin pulp (pulp made from a tree), there is 50% cellulose (what is made to make paper), 25% lignin (the glue that glues the fibers in trees together), and 25% hemicellulose (kind of like cellulose but is lost in pulping).
in paper, there is <1% lignin, and lignin is recycled from the pulping process and is used to power about 70%+ of all the energy required to make paper.
this means that if you want to make paper out of old paper, you have to do it without having the convenience of lignin (which comes free with a tree)... meaning you have to pay for alllllll that energy out of your pocket.
i'll post more stuff about it later. i'm tired as shit and i want to leave DH.

i dont care about recycling paper ^^ is right
plus its a renewable resource, i think we're better off focusing on plastics and glass than on paper which biodegrades naturally anyway
the rate at which we're cutting trees as a planet is another issue, i'm just talking about paper in general. 2/21/2008 12:34:09 AM |

another thing people are ill informed about
tree growth exceeds consumption by 37%
most wood is used for Construction + survival (houses + firewood), and furniture, and Paper/Board
it is a problem though, however.
