Great thread! Too bad you couldn't have taken your lips off of your cum-filled straw long enough to type his name.

Quote :
"Minnesota defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Everett Withers has decided to take the same position at North Carolina, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune is reporting. According to the paper, Withers accepted the job on Sunday.

Withers, the highest-paid assistant coach in Gophers history, will replace Chuck Pagano, who resigned last week to become an assistant coach with the Baltimore Ravens.

Withers interviewed in North Carolina late last week and accepted the job Sunday. He declined to comment when contacted Sunday. He is expected to discuss his decision once North Carolina officially announces his hiring.

Withers had two years remaining on a deal at Minnesota that was worth nearly $1 million. He is expected to receive a slight raise at North Carolina from his $330,000 annual salary.

Withers is believed to have pursued the North Carolina job in part because it is a better fit for him and his family. He went to college at Appalachian State, his mother lives in Charlotte and almost all of his coaching career has been spent in the South."

He was coaching their defense under a first-year head coach. He also helped to pull in a top-25 recruiting class for 2008.

"Minnesota finished last nationally in Division I-A in total defense, allowing a school-record 6,224 yards -- nearly 520 per game. The Gophers ranked 103rd or worse in seven major defensive categories. "

Take a look at Withers' resume up until last year. There's a reason he was such a highly-paid DC. He had absolutely no talent to work with at Minnesota.

Butch Davis had absolutely no talent with the Browns too right?

He'll probably teach / coach / emphasize defense as much as Roy Williams

well we know now how he got hired - star ratings, and so unc can eternally have the excuse "oh we have so much talent they're just so young"

i wonder if he'll get a raise after their next 4-8 season...maybe he can hold duke < 40 points.

Botch Davis will finally show how he is a mediocre gameday coach. Granted he is a great recruiter, but he can't manage a staff worth a damn.

Bitch Davis is starting to turn into Chuck Amato part 2.

Good, arguably great recruiter? Check
Questionable game-day coaching abilities? Check
Lame excuses for losses? Check
High rate of staff turnover? So far, Check

I hope he keeps this shit up. I'll be laughing harder than a Carolina fan laughs at NC State basketball.

I admit i haven't looked closely at his resume (aside from the titans) ... but I don't see what's so incredibly great about it. Titans DB coach for six years? IIRC those teams had a combined two playoff wins in that six year period. Funny their defense turned into a powerhouse this past season (his first season not there).

He may potentially be an incredible hire ... but anyone who coordinates the worst defense IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY has a lot to prove

And let's not forget that Minnesota plays in the Big Ten with all those high powered offenses.

lets also not forget that we hired the Kentucky defensive coordinator, whose defense was something like #117/119 nationally.

so, i guess they are keeping on par with us.

^umm...Archer's defense in his final year at UK was a lot better than that. It was a fairly dramatic improvement iirc considering UK was about to feel the full effects of probation when the Rich Brooks regime took over.

Quote :
"With 16 of his top 22 players either freshmen or sophomores, Archer’s defensive unit forced 28 turnovers in 2006, as the Wildcats ranked fifth nationally in turnover margin."

^^ Yeah and Archer's defense was also playing against SEC offenses that live to score as opposed to Big Ten offenses that live to hold onto the ball and grind down their opponents.
