Unless they didn't do this last year, it has been my understanding that they always did the Daily Tarhell for the home games against Carolina only not the away games.

Apologies for no Daily Tar Hell spoof
Josh Harrell

Due to budgetary restraints this year, the Technician was unable to print this year's edition of the Daily Tar Hell -- the annual spoof edition of UNC's student newspaper. The edition historically came out on the day N.C. State's men's basketball team faces the Tar Heels in Raleigh.
I know many of you have come to expect the Daily Tar Hell each year, and we apologize for not being able to run it. It's an edition that we enjoy producing and something we look forward to each year.
Any thoughts on us not printing the edition this year are welcome as always. We are grateful for your continued support and interest in our newspaper.

BELIEVE ME when I say they are ALL as upset about this as we are. They already had stories in the works and everything. Everyone, Josh in particular, is really really disappointed they can't do it.

This is bullshit. How do "budgetary restraints" have any effect on printing the Daily Tar Hell? It's just like a normal issue.

This is the only part of the Technician that doesn't suck and they can't even get it to the students.

We don't even get a big picture for the game, just some hack-job comic with Bunting riding a lawnmower.

Why don't they just put the stories up online at least?

So the Technician, which has, for all intents and purposes, a captive audience of NCSU students cannot sell enough ads to pay for the one issue that the student body cares about the most? Maybe they could have some foresight and save some money during the year.

I also don't see why it is so different from a normal issue.

^^ The ad staff is separate from the editorial staff. Different students doing different jobs.

It is different in that there is also a normal issue that comes out. Extra ads must be sold on top of what is normally sold. And selling enough ads for normal issues has been a struggle in the past year.

Ad sales in newspapers across the country are trending down, so this isn't unexpected; there are consequences though.

I will seriously be glad to talk about this over PM with you. There are some things I'm not willing to just throw out in public as explanations.

But I promise you, the issue was being planned, stories were in the works, design was being talked about, and on Monday, Josh, the EIC, found out there wasn't enough ad sales to support it. He is just as angry and disappointed as you are.

^ Haha I know right. Also, student fees do not pay for Technician. The Student Media fees support KNC, Windhover, Agromeck and Nubian Message. Don't take that as Gospel; I'm not 100 percent on it. But I'm reasonably certain. Technician is self-supported by ad sales.

I'm sure the students who write the stories and such wanted to run with the issue; I'm angry at the staff that couldn't make it happen.

Also, I wasn't aware that a normal issue ran alongside the Daily Tar Hell since that is all I ever remember about the Technician on these game days.

ha...no doubt about that.

^^ yes, the DTH spoof is just a cover wrap around a regular issue. But the cover wrap still has to be produced by people who will be paid for their work, which necessitates more ad sales to cover it.

It's very complicated, and there is no simple solution.
