1: Wear proper attire Show up in proper workout attire—nothing too distracting. Assume people are there to focus on their workout. Likewise, stay focused on yours—don’t leer or stare at other people.
2: Arrive early If there’s a spinning bike or area of the weight or yoga room that you’re partial to, arrive early to get it. Don’t assume you can just show up and claim it.
3: Wipe off sweat Wipe your sweat off every bench, seat, pad, or bar after you’re done using it.
4: Don't grunt or groan Keep your grunts and groans to yourself—unless you’re in distress.
5: Don't spit Don’t spit—seriously. If you want to spit, go workout outside.
6: Don't rest at station Don’t rest or take a break on a machine or at a station. Someone could be waiting to use it.
7: Ask kindly to work in w/ someone If someone won’t leave a station, kindly ask, “Would you mind if I work in with you?”
8: Allow someone to work in w/ you If someone asks to work in with you say, “Yes,” get up, and allow them to do their sets between yours.
9: Make sure spotter can support weight When asking for a spotter to help you, make sure the person can fully support the weight you’re trying to lift.
10: Communicate w/ spotter Make sure you and your spotter are on the same page by demonstrating what you want.
11: Spot your spotter Offer to spot your spotter when he or she needs one.
12: Return weights & pins When you’re finished, replace all free weights to their proper stacks and return the pins in weight machines to the lowest weight.
13: Clean your locker Clean out your locker of smelly clothes and damp towels.
14: Get over sweat People sweat—sometimes a lot—at the gym. Get over it! 2/27/2008 12:42:30 PM |

This is the only one I disagree with. While, yes, some people do it excessively, if you're lifting hard you're going to make some kind of noise.
Besides, everyone has headphones on these days anyway.2/27/2008 1:03:37 PM |

if i'm doin a heavy weight, i'm gonna grunt on my exhale for each rep- i can't help it and i'll be damned if i'm gonna do less than potential capabilities because someone doesn't want to "hear it"
i mean damn, most people at all the gyms i go to these days have their ipods blasting anyway so what should they care 2/27/2008 1:09:05 PM |

i don't really expect people to be completely silent but some dudes you would think were giving birth--i mean, damn...
the main things that irritate me are dudes that like to lounge on equipment they're not using and chicks that give me the evil eye when i don't wipe-down every damned thing i touch 2/27/2008 1:10:32 PM |

^^^have you ever done powerlifting?
or tried to push yourself when working out?
i believe they even have an episode about this on sports science
grunting or even yelling while performing an explosive movement will increase your power

its called controlling your breathing to make the lift efficient, what bothers me is people that try to hold their breaths while lifting so that they dont grunt
that shit isnt safe2/27/2008 1:13:00 PM |
baonest All American 47902 Posts user info edit post |
not really true.
you could be lifting 50 lbs 100 times. at around 80 you might need some extra ummph.
there is nothing wrong with grunting. i mean i do a little grunt to myself. i doubt anyone can hear it. it helps.
its better than holding your breath

So should I not have pooped on the elliptical machine? 2/27/2008 1:14:08 PM |
ZomBCraw Suspended 6999 Posts user info edit post |
i mean granted, there are your grunters and your screamers
screamers are wasting energy by screaming during non integral points of the lifts, the guys that scream after theyve put the weight back into a resting position
yea thats annoying
i mean guys that are excited about maxing a little more than they had expected yea let em scream, it gets me pumped to see people improve
but screaming all day while walking to the water fountain and putting your gloves on isnt cool 2/27/2008 1:17:11 PM |

Also, don't walk up close to someone lifting. This would especially include someone in the rack, doing deads in the open, or doing oly's in the open. It's not just dagerous for them, but for you. 2/27/2008 4:10:58 PM |
