An interesting mystery about some hikers in Russia in the 1950's.
Thought some people might be interested in it and offer up what they think happened...

Quote : | "Facts ignored by official inquest
Some researchers point out the following facts which were missed, perhaps ignored, by officials:
* After the funerals, relatives of the deceased claimed that the skin of the victims had a strange orange tan, and that the dead were completely grey-haired.
* A former investigating officer said, in a private interview, that his dosimeter had shown a high radiation level on Kholat Syakhl, and that this was the reason for the radiation found on the bodies. However, the source of the contamination was not found.
* Another group of hikers (about 50 kilometers south of the accident) reported that they saw strange orange spheres in the night sky to the north (likely the direction of in Kholat Syakhl) at the same date as the accident happened. Similar "spheres" were observed in Ivdel and adjacent areas continually during the period of February to March 1959, by various independent witnesses (including the meteorology service and the military). The search team reported that they had observed the same spheres above Kholat Syakhl on March 31.
* Some reconstructions of the victims' behavior suggest that they were blinded. The rescue team had seen that the victims broke damp and thick pine branches for the fire, even though there was good dry brushwood around.
* Some objects found near the camp were not identified as properties of any of the group members.
* One victim, Dubunina, had no tongue." |

Yeah, I found it very interesting and actually pretty credible since the search party and the investigations were so big and public.
I was amazed too that I had never heard about it before on like a TV show or anything. 2/28/2008 1:07:45 PM |

probably an avalanche 2/28/2008 1:19:10 PM |

Two major problems with the avalanche theory:
Radiation...
And the team would likely not have been able to find the campsite if it was because of an avalanche. The investigators noted that the campsite looked mostly fine and an avalanche was not apparent. The tent wasn't covered up by several feet of snow or anything.
Other things:
The injured people obviously made it out of the camp and then were trying to crawl/walk back towards the camp.

Not a single reference is cited for any of the "facts" in the entire wiki article. Most of this stuff could be the creation of peoples imaginations for all we know. 2/28/2008 1:59:24 PM |

yes, it could be...which is why the article is locked...but it might NOT be made up, either (i'm too lazy to search for other sources) 2/28/2008 2:00:53 PM |

It's a Soviet Era conspiracy story...what do you expect? All of the "sources" are in russian.
There's a link to an issue in the Moscow Times from just a few weeks ago about the event:

A more recent article from the St. Petersburg Times with pictures:

Some pictures of the expedition:

Oh,and one of the weirdest bits:
- The russian government banned travel to the area for 3 years after the incident.
