I'd be nervous to put that plane back in the air after I bumped a wing like that...what if it was damaged? Or the landing gear was smashed? Guess it's knee-jerk reactions and thinking at that point, though. 3/3/2008 2:09:17 PM |

Much credit to the pilot for not crashing the fucking thing.

Every time I see videos of shit like this on the internet I wonder who these people are who go around recording everything.
Sometimes I'm glad they do like the skateboarder v. cop incident or some of the crazy fights at parties, but other times I'm disturbed because there's a good chance somebody out there has video of me that I don't know about. Not like video of me fucking a clown or anything, but maybe video of me scratching my ass at DH Hill or something.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like the pilot may have begun straightening too soon. I thought the 747 could actually land in a crabbed orientation, and the rear tires will just slide sideways. Then, once some speed is scrubbed off the pilot can yaw it forward. In this case it looks like he pointed it forward when it was well in the air, so he had to correct to keep it aligned with the runway.
[Edited on March 3, 2008 at 4:10 PM. Reason : well nvm, it isn't a 747... But does that still apply to large jets?] 3/3/2008 3:56:54 PM |

I felt sideways as shit during a landing at RDU one time, we were the last plane to land before they shut the runway down for a few hours. I'm SURE it was nothing like that..but even a little bit is weird as hell feeling 3/3/2008 4:01:36 PM |

I've never heard that, but you may be right.
All of the wheels on a B52 can be pivoted so that the plane can actually land and takeoff in a crab.3/3/2008 4:35:55 PM |

Considering he probably would have destroyed the plane on that landing, its better to go around and he didn't hit the wing 'that' hard. Its not knee jerk, its training... if your landing is fucked, go around.
It did look like he came out of that crab too early, and that was a helluva crab angle too, its quite possible he hit some kinda wind shear right before touchdown.
^yes but its possible that the wind either gusted, or he hit wind shear, which is kinda hard to correct for no matter how good you are especially if it hits you right before touchdown. I'd like to see YOU try and do it.

^^ I just think there are many factors you/we can't consider in that video, theres no way to know entirely whats going on in that video. Pretty overgeneralized statement saying the pilot 'fucked up', he may have, or he may have *gotten* fucked over by a gust of crosswind or something else.
Either way, everyone lived, and the plane is probably reusable.
Heres some more crosswind landings (and aborts): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RdxU-0W-RE 3/3/2008 6:16:24 PM |

Interview with guy on plane... during landing it was "dead silent", saw the wing scrape the ground
Plane landed 10 mins later on another runway into the wind (I thought if the wind is really bad and you have another runway thats into the wind... why not use that one??)
Now, the next time you get mad over an airplane being delayed/rerouted because of bad weather, watch this, those crazy Hong Kongians apparently allow you to land in the middle of a fuckin typhoon! http://www.laurencescholte.com/flying/mandarinmd11crash.avi
Quote : | "In August 1999 a Mandarin Airlines MD-11 crashed at Hong Kong during a Typhoon. The crash was attributed to windshear during landing. The aircraft's right wing struck the ground and was torn off causing it to roll onto its back (FedEx had a very similar MD-11 crash in New York a short time later). Despite the intensity of the crash there were only 3 fatalities amongst the 315 pax and crew. This first photo was taken the day after and shows the crashed airplane upside down with another Mandarin MD-11 taxiing by (I wonder what the passengers on the right side of that airplane were thinking when they saw that out their windows). The mpeg is amateur video of the crash, most interesting is the reaction of the people watching." |
