Dont turn it on until you are sure it is 100% dry.

I usually put my wet cell phones in a hot car for a day or two and that gets them working. But since its not that hot out right now thats not really an option.

yea, if you think it's dry. Give it a few more days of time.

If you turn it on and it's wet at all, it's lost.

I'd take it apart and let it air out like that.

as of now it's face down on a very absorbant paper towel. I had the key lock on so it didn't turn on in the wash, and it was in a neoprene case w/ the headphone wrapped around it....so hopefully we'll be in business soon...I'm going to give it about 2-3 days though in my room on top of the towel w/ the fan going hard all day while I'm at work and see how that does

after you wipe it off, put it in a Tupperware container with some silica gel if you happen to have a bunch of the packets laying around, or dry rite / damp rid from your local grocery store, for 24-48 hours

[Edited on March 5, 2008 at 6:36 PM. Reason : elevate it above the dessicant, most of that stuff will gel when it nears its capacity]

^
You can also try that same technique with uncooked rice instead of silica gel.

Putting it in a bag of uncooked rice will help absorb the moisture.

Good luck.

The battery was connected throughout the entire process.

Yea I've saved a few cell phones by pulling the battery out as soon as it hits the water and leaving it out for a week or two while doing whatever I can think of to dry it out..

Not sure how that's going to work out with the battery being in the whole time

I really didn't wanna spend my tax returns on iPod, but a 3rd gen 8gb for $160 might do the trick...we'll see...

and I'll actually try to turn it on tomorrow around 6 so wish me luck...one more day of drying out!!

Yay!

That is teh awesome for you.

That said, and for future folks who have similar oops problems -

I've always had the best luck with electronics with air drying apart, and then looking for any residue on contacts from minerals etc in the water (not that i've had to do this often).

Sometimes I've found (this is ONLY after 100% drying and if it doesnt work at that point), that if there are contacts you can get to etc, cleaning them with an acohol or other safe cleaning solution for what you're working on, can also help. I have seen twice residue from very mineral-heavy water prevent things from working right as opposed to actual water damage/shorts - which was fixed by that cleaning method. That, and at that point you generally have very little to loose by trying it.

Obligatory warning- dont be a dumbass if you try this. Power disconnect, batteries out, watch out for capacitors while cleaning things - I use a q-tip which isn't conductive but dont set it on fire or anything. If it's got a potential to fry you- leave it alone!

I really just:
1) left it on a table I put on my bed w/ the fan on high for 2 days,
2)then put it in a ziplock bag w/ cotten balls for one day,
3)then turned it on...and I was amazed that something happend...but it started playing and even the headphones worked, it holds a charge and everything...it's amazing...nothing wrong w/ the click wheel either...

apple is def. getting my next purchase on MP3 player if this things messes up...gah it's a 1st gen too!!! I'm still excited about not having to use my tax returns on a 3rd gen!!! thinking about mailing apple and talking up their build quality and mayB they would do something nice...probably wayyyyyy unlikely though, but worth a shot!
