Governor Eliot Spitzer at a news conference in July 2007.
Mr. Spitzer, who was huddled with his top aides early this afternoon, had hours earlier abruptly canceled his scheduled public events for the day. He is set to make an announcement about 2:15 this afternoon at his Manhattan office.
Mr. Spitzer, a first-term Democrat who pledged to bring ethics reform and end the often seamy ways of Albany, is married with three children.
Just last week, federal prosecutors arrested four people in connection with an expensive prostitution operation. Administration officials would not say that this was the ring with which the governor had become involved.
He had a difficult first year in office, rocked by a mix of scandal and legislative setbacks. In recent weeks, however, Mr. Spitzer seemed to have rebounded, with his Democratic party poised to perhaps gain control of the state Senate for the first time in four decades.
Mr. Spitzer gained national attention when he served as attorney general with his relentless pursuit of Wall Street wrongdoing. As attorney general, he also had prosecuted at least two prostitution rings as head of the state’s organized crime task force.
In one such case in 2004, Mr. Spitzer spoke with revulsion and anger after announcing the arrest of 16 people for operating a high-end prostitution ring out of Staten Island.
“”This was a sophisticated and lucrative operation with a multitiered management structure,” Mr. Spitzer said at the time. ”It was, however, nothing more than a prostitution ring.”
Albany for months been roiled by bitter fighting and accusations of dirty tricks. The Albany County district attorney is set to issue in the coming days the results of his investigation into Mr. Spitzer’s first scandal, his aides’ involvement in an effort to tarnish Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno, the state’s top Republican." |

I don't mind elected officials getting some tail on the side as long as they can govern effectively and are not hypocrites about it. I don't care that Larry Craig engages in homosexual acts. I am only mad about his because he is a rabid homophobe and actively worked against homosexual rights. I didn't care that Mark Foley was a homosexual. I only cared because of his rabid homophobia and the fact that it was underage boys.
I don't care about Elliot Spitzer getting it on outside of marriage, other than the fact it was with a prostitute and he made his early career off busting prostitutes.
I didn't care about Jim McGreey being a homosexual 3/10/2008 2:14:43 PM |

i have no problem with him fucking prostitutes from a high end whore house like this, where the women have a choice in the matter (assuming that is the case). i would have a problem if he was going to some shady place where women are forced into prostitution (like some places in chinatown). his family matters aren't of concern to me.
i have a big problem with the fact that he was so vocally against prostitution and is now found to be a hypocrite. to me, that is the only issue here... though he broke the law and it will be a much bigger issue to those that abide by all laws and morally oppose protitution.
for me, it's the same as craig. i had no problem with what he did, only the fact that he was hypocrite. 3/10/2008 3:13:35 PM |

It wasn't even the sex that initially got the FBI sniffing around.
They were investigating him for possible "structuring" -moving money around in order to hide it. The FBI thought he was hiding bribes and later found out he was just paying prostos.
Quote : | ""Today, I want to briefly address a private matter. I have acted in a way that violates my obligation to my family, and that violates my — or any sense of right and wrong. I apologize first, and most importantly, to my family. I apologize to the public, who I promised better.

Sounds to me like a little Clinton-esque compartmentalizing. How about:
"I apologize to the voters of New York who put their trust in me as the state's top official. I have also shamed the attorney general's dept -my years of prosecuting people for the very crime I have committed numerous times. My acts have done nothing but given those cynics of public service more reasons to distrust those in power. I am without worth...please don't look at me"

BTW, many in the news media have been calling this situation a "tragedy"--I don't recall them using that word about any Republican sex scandals. And I heard some idiot e-mailers on NPR this morning that seemed to be asking if Bush's wiretaps were responsible for this.

I heard basically the same thing, that the FBI doesn't usually specifically target prostitution, but it often comes up during the course of investigating something else, like shady money deals.
Quote : | "And I heard some idiot e-mailers on NPR this morning that seemed to be asking if Bush's wiretaps were responsible for this. " |
while you could argue about the semantics of what "responsible for this" means, but overall it is a valid point. The FBI could have been using wiretapping provisions from FISA or the Patriot Act to gather the information that they did.3/11/2008 11:48:37 AM |

2. I pointed out that the left-wing media is wringing its hands over the Spitzer scandal in ways that I haven't observed with similar Republican scandals.

No, i'm not "blaming" the Bush wiretaps. The asshole deserved to be caught either way. But it's perfectly legitimate to wonder if the FBI used any of their relatively new-found powers to obtain the data they did. Either way, I don't care how they got their info as long as it was legal under whatever the law was at the time3/11/2008 11:57:32 AM |

i wasn't immediately concerned. It hadn't occurred to me until i heard other people mention it. And from the apparent size of this thing and the amounts of money that was being thrown around, it's hard to imagine it wouldn't have been discovered with only the most basic police work anyway.3/11/2008 12:56:15 PM |
