I walk out of my house, cops are all over my car like it's a crime scene. I asked them if I could help them. They ignored me (they didn't think that was my car). Then I asked them what they were doing with my car. They said "oh, this is your car?"

Fucking cops

Anyway, they gave me a $100 ticket after they ran my plates and learned I don't have any outstanding warrants. The ticket was for expired registration. My car is still registered in NC, and NC gives you a 15 day grace period, so it doesn't even REALLY expire for 3 days. Fuck those cops. I already renewed the registration online, but now I have to go to court and shit.

Keep in mind, I WASN'T EVEN DRIVING THE FUCKING CAR!!!!!! IT WAS PARKED, AND I WAS NOT IN IT.

oh, and I almost burned my house down last night

HOW COULD THIS BEFALLEN I????

I am so sad

it doesnt matter if you were in the car or not, they could still ticket you. they could have had you towed.

this is an easy drop though.

nah, if you look at the NCDOT site it says there is a 15 day grace period - it's standard, so no, it wasn't REALLY expired.

I know plenty of people who have cars that they don't driva and aren't registered at all. Are they all in dangers of having all of their cars towed?

Is the date on the sticker in the past or future? That's all they care about. Why would DC cops give a shit if NC has a grace period. They don't work for NC.

If they park on public streets, then yes.

well, at least they weren't racial profiling. Be glad you didn't get a ticket (yet) for not switching to DC plates lol.

Yeah, that doesn't make any sense. I know you're supposed to turn your plates in if you don't have it registered for a certain length of time, but I can't imagine getting in trouble for a car that is just sitting in the parking lot with expired registration.

was it in a driveway? They can't ticket you if it wasn't on private property. Don't car laws only apply on public roads?

It was on a road, so I guess that was the deal.

I really don't understand why the cops were checking tags on my street this morning though, it's just weird. I couldn't believe my eyes when I walked out of my door this morning and saw my parked car being pulled over!

sorry to hear about this.

1. go to the court date and show them that you have a new registration. the magistrate will wave a magic wand. (literally he'll sign a form) and you'll walk out of the building with no ticket to pay.

2. pay parking fee in random downtown parking deck

3. buy hookers

4. ?

profit

the grace period is just that.

it expires at the end of the month. the grace period could be for fines or what not.

if you're on public property and/or its in the way (the owner of property cares enough to call police), then yes. its also a liability issue.

if its at your house. then no.

He lives in DC though. I don't know what the laws are there, but I think if you have been a resident of the state for more than 30 days you have to have your registration transferred to a new state.

Just pay it. It'll be a huge hassle.

There's been a crime spree recently in my neighborhood, people were literally getting robbed at gunpoint on the Metro escalator last week. This isn't jiving well with the owners of the new (near) million dollar condos and homes lining the streets in Columbia Heights. I think it's weird that instead of a meter maid giving me a ticket, a cop spend 30 minutes this morning engaging in this nonsense. 2 weeks ago my friend was robbed at gunpoint taking out the fucking trash! I mean, come on! fight some fucking crime!

^ and to get my car registered in DC I'll have to pay over $200 straight up, and pay their ridiculous property tax on my car. Not to mention my insurance will go up at least $70 a month. Lots of my friends from NC that now live up here have gotten away with keeping their cars registered in NC for YEARS. I may tell them I'm moving back to NC soon

^^^ I still have NC plates and I've been in Denver for 2 years

I don't know what proof they'll ask for if you tell them you were "just visiting". You still have a NC license?

^^No, my NC lisence expired on 1/1/08, I have a DC lisence now. I would have had to go back to NC and take a test in order to renew, it wasn't worth it.

They don't care - there's a disconnect between the two here (plates and lisence)

Damn, I can't think of any ways to get out of this one, sorry. They're gonna ask why you didn't switch the plates and won't dismiss it I believe.

the DC parking authority runs all out of state plates it continually sees parked on the DC streets.

they want your money from registration fees the same way cities annex land to increase tax base

more houses/cars = more money

its a revenue generating activity

thats essentially why it happened

Actually, it was. The grace period is for you to get expired shit in order. So yes, it was infact expired. Your logic fails.
