Quote : | "David Bracken, Staff Writer, N&O 3-13-08 RALEIGH - Several City Council members who voted last week to ban the installation of new garbage disposals now say that decision should be reviewed. But despite a public outcry over the ban and the way it was enacted, a majority of council members appear unwilling to repeal the ordinance, which is scheduled to take effect Monday.
"I don't think the council perceived this as being of great interest to the public," Mayor Charles Meeker said. He said the ban will save water and reduce the city's discharge of nitrogen into the Neuse River.
Several council members complain that they didn't get enough information from city staff before the vote. "I'm not entirely happy with how this was managed," Koopman said. He supports repealing the ban while it is being reviewed. " |
We were told it would be too expensive to update the Raleigh sewer system, so let's just stop using modern appliances. We have enough money to spend on piece-of-crap art sculptures on the side of the highway...but not for basic repairs on infrastructure?
Hey the roads are also getting worn..would everyone just stop driving on them...thanx!

from what I read the way it was presented was extremely shady too....basically no advanced notice that there was even going to be a vote about it.

what a blatant lie, how could they not think this would be of public interest?

meeker pisses me off.
he talks big about things like predatory towing, yet not a damn thing has been done to stop it.
he was late in enforcing water restrictions due to the drought, and now that it has rained a little bit, he is the first one to suggest we start reducing the restrictions. no fucking thought of the future.
and this garbage disposal shit? I will continue to use mine, and I imagine most of raleigh will too. 3/13/2008 1:23:40 PM |

^ The 88.6 million Raleigh Parks bond. They are building a new Aquatics facility off of Buffaloe Rd. And filling it with some water. From the nitrogen infused Neuse.
Of course, I believe they just put low flow devices in their pool system. Might take longer to fill it up, but they will meet water restriction requirements 3/13/2008 2:03:43 PM |

Its as much about water conservation as it is about grease. People with garbage disposals pour much more grease into the city's sewer system, causing expensive blockages. 3/14/2008 1:11:29 AM |

^ If we let them, politicians like mayor Meeker will regulate us all back to the stone-age.
The point is that we pay all these taxes. Fixing the sewer system so it can function like 99% of the rest of the country is not asking for much.
The 2007 Raleigh city budget has 7% allocated for solid waste treatment. It has 11% devoted to "Leisure Services". 3/14/2008 8:57:45 AM |

The People's Republic of Raleigh is out of control. As I understand it, the primary justification of this disposal ban was that drain lines are being clogged by grease. Did any council members consider that people have been pouring and still can pour grease directly down the drains without the need for disposals? 3/14/2008 9:37:59 AM |
Skwinkle burritotomyface 19447 Posts user info edit post |
^ That and I doubt this will stop a lot of people (because there are a lot of idiots out there) from trying to put stuff down the drain. Now it's just going to cause plumbing issues in their homes rather than in the city's pipes ... but good going Raleigh, it's not their problem anymore.

maybe, but if you grill some bacon or something, you could easily pour the grease down your drain without a disposal. Of course, this could 1) melt your drain pipes if it's still hot, or 2) just clog your drains 3/17/2008 10:59:30 AM |

actually, (and I could be wrong,)
but I thought this was only a ban on the installation of [new] disposals in newly built residences
not a ban on the post-construction [self] installation of disposals
nor a ban on the continued ownership and use of already installed disposals
nor a ban on the sale of disposals
iow, not what any of you are talking about or responding to
(again, I could be wrong about this)
soQuote : | "Hey the roads are also getting worn..would everyone just stop driving on them...thanx!" | would be more like
"Hey the road maintenance crews are getting overworked...would everyone stop driving on the few newly completed roads with their snow chains on, ...thanx!"
don't get me wrong
I agree that the legislative hubris and incompetence displayed here by the council is quite lame
not that I'm the least bit surprised
Quote : | "The council unanimously approved the ban with little discussion after City Manager Russell Allen said it would prevent sewer overflows by reducing the amount of grease that people pour down their drains." |
which it wouldn't necessarily even do, (as hooksaw pointed out)

this is asinine. despite these assholes taking money out of my pocket as a plumbing contractor, the reasoning makes zero sense logistically. there is no way they actually consulted anyone in the know before doing this.
1. disposals do nothing to flush away grease. if anything, they HELP keep less of it out of the sewer because more of it's going to be sitting in the bottom, stuck to the sides, etc. of the appliance.
2. the majority of people that own a disposal understand what's good/bad to put down drains. i've seen FAR more ridiculous stuff put down normal drains. not to say there aren't the few people out there trying to grind up the entire contents of their trash can...
3. there are these neat little things called grease traps for this very reason. if they're SO concerned about this, require grease traps to be installed at private residences like they already are for restaurants, etc.
4. what about all the chemicals like liquid plumber, draino, etc. that are now going to get dumped into sinks more? i'm sure that's much better for the environment! also, in case these retards don't know most of that stuff congeals or hardens to pipe walls worse than grease.
5. what shall we do about everything else that causes grease build up in pipes? you know, like oils from our body, soap, shampoo, hair, etc.? hell, lets just ban indoor plumbing all together!
the current mayor/council has made some idiotic moves, but this has got to be the worst so far. i really hope the decision was about water conservation and they wanted to mask it for some reason. at least that would make a little sense, disposals do require additional water to properly operate. 3/17/2008 4:19:04 PM |

If you need a new disposal, just buy one in cary, and then post on craigslist for someone to install it for you. Plenty of qualified, able people who can do it without worry about their plumbers license being revoked.

Raleigh Says Bye-Bye to Disposals
Quote : | "The disposal ban, which the City Council approved two weeks ago, is among the first in the country. Violators face fines of up to $25,000 per day [emphasis added].
Under the ban, homeowners can continue to use existing disposals, but no new devices can be installed and existing ones can't be replaced when they quit working. Homes that have obtained city permits and are already under construction will be allowed to keep their disposals, officials said.
Some builders and residents said they would protest the disposal ban at Tuesday's council meeting." |
Quote : | "'I don't think people had forewarning,' Gaylord said. 'I think there is some confusion out there as to how this will be implemented and what the parameters are.'
The ban also has come under fire from City Councilman Philip Isley, who missed the March 4 vote on the issue, and from the mayors of Garner, Knightdale, Rolesville, Wake Forest, Wendell and Zebulon.
The six towns are part of the municipal water and sewer system, so Raleigh's regulations apply to residents in those towns as well. The other mayors said they should have been consulted before Raleigh enacted the disposal ban." |
