i don't know if this belongs in garage or not, but i suspect someone will have an idea in shit shat, and i might even get some great NSFW pictures in the process!
anyway, i'm looking for a rack that will allow me to carry a kayak and bikes (not at the same time)...needs to fit a 2002 saturn sl1 (so i assume it's a rain gutter system)...suggestions? 3/18/2008 10:38:10 AM |

are all "rain gutter" systems the same, or is there a particular model (for either yakima or thule) i should be looking at?
would these work? http://www.rei.com/product/490007
i did the fitting guide and they're saying the Q towers (at $250+ for 4 towers and 2 bars, which is a bit steep IMO), even though what i've read online MOSTLY says that the 1A's should fit just about any car with rain gutters

looking at picking up a set of 5-year-old yakima q towers (with the bars and two raptor bike rack/locks)...anyone know if the q towers from 5 years ago are any different than new ones, and whether or not certain components break down over that amount of time? 4/10/2008 10:33:37 AM |

thule seems to be more expensive for the base equipment and fit kits...also, there's more used yakima equipment out there
it could be that way because people don't like their yakima equipment as much, or it could be that there's just more out there in general, so therefore there's more used equipment available...but since they both rank pretty highly and there are no major complaints, i'm going with the latter 4/10/2008 11:35:23 AM |

I've had my Yakima rack for about 2 years now...and bought it all used.
No complaints WHATSOEVER. I love it. I also prefer round bars over the square Thule bars.
I've heard round is stronger.
I can hook you up with an older Yakima rain gutter system if you're interested...PM me for more info. It's not in PERFECT shape, but should get the job done once you order the correct mounting tabs for your car. 4/10/2008 11:41:58 AM |
