I just bought a house that had a Brinks System installed. I want to be able to plug the security system in (so there isnt an AC adapter hanging out of my wall) and use the alarm locally (not monitored by Brinks).

The assholes who sold me the house refused to give me their access code and the Brinks dude refuses to program it for me without me signing his 3 year contract. Is there any way I can change the access code without knowing the previous owner's code?

Just curious:

Why did you buy a house if the previous owners refused to give you the code?

I'm pretty sure there is..can you give a model #? I know the one here at work you can program as long as it is unlocked without having the code and the procedure is pretty simple.

[Edited on March 19, 2008 at 8:15 AM. Reason : and sounds like you bought from some pricks..they should have at least changed it to what you wanted]

^^That wasnt exactly an issue that came up during the contract signing of the house. Their argument was, if you want a code, call Brinks and they can set you up.

My guess is that they used their soc sec number or something like that for their code. That woman was a total bitch about it.

^I'll get the model number off of it when I get to the house.

that would make me nervous about the rest of the house, but i guess you can rely on your home inspector and your own inspection of the house...

why would the security system code have anything to do with the condition of the house? They just didnt want to give it to me because I low balled them on the house and they made things more difficult because of it.

I think anybody selling about now is probably a bit pissy about the prices they're able to get..so, understandable IMO

and they're probably using the same code at their new house and are too ignorant to realize you aren't trying to scam them.

I'm trying to sell my house right now. It looks like I'll end up taking a bit less than I thought I would.

I installed my own security system that I purchased from smarthome.com. It came with an instruction manual that was somewhat tedious to follow but the system works great. I have ot setup to call my cellphone when it goes off. We've set it off several times but haven't had a single false alarm in 5 years. I got one of the GE networkX systems for around $200.
