you had never heard "All the way"?

and sick and ill seem like pretty universal (or at least national) terms...not really colloquialisms

I haven't been back up north in awhile, but this is how they talked when I left.

North
What it is? (What is it?)
Mang (man)
carried like a shopping bag (insulted very heavily)
steal ya in the jaw (punch)
The Dozens (A "Yo Momma" showdown)

Spontaneous, where did you live in the North? B/c those things aren't uttered anywhere in NY/NJ/PA/DE, thats for sure.

Quote :

again, what is this? they're interchangeable up here in the north.

"Wicked" is a New England thing, and thats well known. Keep that shit up there, retarded saying.

so it seems the lines have blurred a lot.

I still contest that I will only hear that the bottom feel out during a storm in the Bible Belt, while Cletus cuts the light on.

I"m from Prince George's County, Maryland, where it's 32% black, 32% hispanic, 32% white, and 6% Asian. We have no identity. We just steal it from everybody else's.

And the ill thing was a horrible example. I just happened to be illin' to some Beastie Boys and getting some sick air on Tony Hawk.

the Yoopers have an interesting dialect in Michigan and Wisconsin
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yooper_dialect

Gullah is another interesting dialect in the Low Country of Georgia and South Carolina

the High Tiders are another example

i could argue that they do, not saying that i will not listen and learn from what you have to say otherwise and change my mind. this debate is too much for to write on a message board, maybe one day if i meet you we can talk about this. but for now, we both are right... deal?

you're not wrong

but I'm more right than you

dialects are defined by their vocabulary and grammar, sure
colloquialisms are results of that

but dialects are also defined by their phonology

Ok friendo

for example

the use of ja is a colloquial flavoring word.

Ich bin kalt.

I am cold.

Ich bin ja kalt.

use of colloquial flavoring agent, however, still considered "upper" or "high" german, not dialectical
