So,

I was enjoying a large ice tea from cook out and as I was watching my favorite tv show on there,

but then i knocked the thing over and about half of the tea spilled onto my laptop. I immediately cut off the power and saved all my work.

I carefully blotted the liquid from the top of the keyboard but I think some of it got into the casing.

However, there was no smoke or weird noises

Then I opened the laptop up and left it to dry, there was no visible water damage as far as I can tell,

But the thing will NOT turn on for some reason,

and the problem is that I need to get some files off the hard drive and get my laptop to work again ASAP

Any advice or help? I am so desperate as there are my 2 term papers on there and I do not want to rewrite them ........$ included. PLEASE

You can take the hard drive out and recover the files on another computer (use an enclosure, cable, etc.).

You said you opened up the laptop. Did you put it back together correctly?

Is there residue left behind by the tea? You may need to clean that up.

You're fucked. You can get your files off by putting that drive into an enclosure and transferring them, but the board on that laptop is most likely hosed.

Hope it's not a work laptop or your IT Admin is going to give you hell.

I cant help today as I told you before. If it was me doing the work here are the things that I would determine:

If the on/off switch has liquid inside of it, then you will still have some problems. Use some iso alcohol on a q-tip to get it to dry out.

The sugar in the tea is the thing that is screwing you up. That really needs to be properly cleaned out. Like I say: I've cleaned these with clean water or lots of alcohol. The alcohol evaporates a lot faster. This is what the mfg uses to clean the boards on the assmbly line.

Your best bet (as others tell you) go to intrex right now. buy an enclosure for a laptop HD and copy the files to another computer.

The tea was dark it should leave a brownish residue after drying, but I checked carefully on the inside of my laptop, there are no visble spots as far as I can tell. ANd yes, it was sweet tea, not too much sugar though and everything is dry now, I pretty much re-opened it again and there are no water left in the laptop

One of the reasons that I need it to work today is because my boss have been trying to call me for some files on my computer (I have just been ignoring his calls, but not sure how long I cna keep doping that for).........and I also need a laptop for work on monday and my current one has all the software etc that I need, and yeah the IT dude will seriously skin my alive for losing all that shit, so the offer still stands, if you can somehow fix my computer today, I dont care what you do or how you do, I will give you a $100 via Paypal.

If you help me get my files off today, I will give you $50.

PLEASE!

Yea, SATA hard drive, will be super easy to get the files off of it. I'm in Asheboro so driving all the way there would cost me $20 just in gas so its not really worth $50.. if you want to come to Asheboro I can do it for you. I'll look at fixing the rest but no guarantees there. You'd need to bring a flash drive or something to put all the files on once I get them off.

it's a SATA hard drive, if his desktop has sata ports he can just connect them up no problem, no reason to buy a case`
