I don't mind helping people by programs like welfare.. most jobs like the one I'm starting soon..made me do a piss test to make sure that I was not doing drugs. So by passing this drug test I get to pay taxes on my earning, and some of the tax I will pay will go to welfare. What I find is funny is that even though I have to do a piss test to pay for people on welfare..people on welfare DO NOT have to pass a piss test to get MY MONEY. I believe by implementing a piss test for people wanting welfare you will cut a significant portion of people on welfare that are not putting the money to good use. It is only fair that if I have to pass a piss test to pay for programs like welfare then the people using it should pass a piss test to receive my money. 3/25/2008 8:32:00 PM |

I think there's already a thread about this...
But how effective do you honestly think this will be? I know plenty of people that have passed drug tests, while still continuing to do drugs.
And secondly, should the gov. make all the investors and executive of Bear Sterns take a drug test before giving them the bail out money?
Should all students that go to a public school or university be required to get drug tested?
Should all gov. funded scholarships mandate drug testing?
The cost to implement this would not out weight the savings associated. There are much more efficient ways to fix gov. spending than some subtly classist/racist mis-guided attempt at attacking welfare. 3/25/2008 8:38:40 PM |

As your governor, I'll work hard to prevent any poor single mother, or teacher from having to do anything as degrading as peeing in a cup to get their money.

^^^ the reason this will never be seriously considered is that it will automatically be called classist/racist and no one will accept that political liability. I'm a teacher, and I get tested because I have a bus driver's license but I don't think other teachers do. 3/25/2008 9:48:13 PM |

^ what, their kids need drugs too?
^^^ That's because most (but not all) people who support these types of programs ARE racist/classist. Why not audit the taxes of families applying for financial aid (and drug test them while we`re at it)?
Poor people using gov. money to buy drugs is a bad thing, but why pick on the crime of drugs and the gov. service of welfare? I see no rational reason to do so. It's one thing to disagree with welfare principles, but it's another to act like it's the only are where people rip off the gov.. I don't know how you would account for this, but I bet the gov. loses far more revenue from people cheating on taxes, than from poor people using welfare to buy drugs. 3/25/2008 11:18:06 PM |

I agree with moron; as for the most part am STRONGLY opposed to the war on drugs. While i disagree and am pissed at the millions who are on welfare to subsidize their drug habits this just signals that the welfare system needs to be overhauled anyway. After all drug abuse should not be a crime.
If we are upset about the poor on welfare wasting money then perhaps we can take the following steps to ensure they are not squandering their marginal disposable income while living off the tax payers
- Ban welfare recipients from having cable. AFterall if they can barely afford food then they shouldn't be getting the HBO SHOWTIME package from timewarner with DVR. Not to mention we do not want to tempt them to stay home all day watching Maury, VH1, and Judge Judy reruns instead of getting a job or working.
- Can't buy alcohol
- No buying cars over 20K
- Have their thermostat set at 65 in winter and 80 on summer to make sure they are not wasting.
[/sarcasm]
wolfpack72 seems to forget that part of the reason of having welfare is not simply out of the humanitarian good feelings our politicians have toward the poor. Not to mention that those who take more benign soft drugs like pot would be more likely effected by this; meanwhile the crackheads would more likely pass the drug tests as long as they can sober up 2-3 days.

i might support piss tests for welfare recipients if the consequence of failing wasn't being removed from welfare, but being put into some sort of program to get off the drugs. because yeah, you can take them off the welfare, but that doesn't mean they're just going to quit the drugs they're addicted to. they're just going to be a different drain on society. they'll likely commit crime to get their cash (or commit more crime if they had already gone down that road). 3/26/2008 9:20:12 AM |

^^i might support welfare if i knew the money being taken from my paycheck wasnt going to support someone's drug habit
why cant the consequence be that person losing their welfare privileges? or if we give them 2nd chance after 2nd chance, is that going to somehow teach them to be responsible parents? fuck no] 3/26/2008 9:23:24 AM |

I agree with what you are saying but poor people waste their money on all sorts of shit when they should be paying for their necessities on their own.

I just think anyone on welfare should be enrolled in gov't sponsored community service projects. This would make poor people work in order to earn their welfare and provide a service to the community. As extra incentive if they are doing manual labor picking up trash from the freeway mid-july or doing some other kind of shitty job perhaps it would give them incentive to get a job of their own and get off welfare. After all when FDR became president he simply didn't start rolling out the welfare checks he created employment programs like the WPA in which young men/women worked on gov't project i.e. norris dam from the TVA. 3/26/2008 9:23:12 PM |

unemployment is low enough that we don't need employment programs. people on welfare don't need to do menial tasks--they need to get jobs.
(the ones with jobs--this doesn't apply to you) 3/26/2008 9:33:28 PM |

^^^ I call it sarcasm Or just funny. I am here to perform my usual function: Prove it? Is there data that shows more welfare recipients use drugs, or, just data that shows what they spend their money on? I mean, I've never known anyone on welfare, so I can't speak to how they live their lives. I'll look, too, but I'm tossing this out there in case someone already knows. 3/27/2008 8:09:13 AM |
