So, my brothers car just started doing this. He's in Charlotte so not much information is available. It runs fine when cold, starts running really rough after it heats up and eventually gets to where it won't stay running. Any ideas or common problems on these that could be doing this??
Google wasn't much help.

I had a truck one time that would start cutting up when it was hot because the coil was giving out and getting overheated. I had the same problem on a Massey Ferguson 35. As the coils got hot the resistance would increase and cause them to run rough. 3/26/2008 7:31:10 PM |

Well I just remembered the ignition control module went out over the summer and had similar symptoms so I told him to go to radioshack and get some of that bottled air, you can turn it upside down and get some super cold spray out of it. So, told him to use that to cool off the ignition control module and coil and see if that makes any difference. 3/27/2008 8:47:42 AM |

I used to have a 92 and had the same problem. IIRC it was the ignition module.

found out new symptoms
it does not actually cut off when running, just won't start back when hot.. it also runs rough over 3500rpm's or so. he won't have any trouble getting it home this afternoon as long as he stays under 60mph or so.. soo, i'll give more info after i have a chance to look at it.
does that change what you guys think it is at all? 3/28/2008 6:41:48 AM |

oh that's definitely most likely main relay..
i had suggested that at first, but then i found that thread and everyone was saying the car wouldnt cut off when running if it was the main relay, just that it wouldnt restart when hot.

I had the switch melt some solder off of mine too. There is a trick to where you can back off of "start" but not quite in the "on" position and hold the key there to drive it a few miles. New switch with harness is about $60 and takes all of 10 minutes to install.
Common honda electrical failures include Main relay, Ignition switch, Ignition control module.
You are describing the main relay symptoms ($45). Open the drivers side door next time it won't start and smack the shit out of the dash (between where the door meets dash) and try and start it. It's location is above interior fuse panel behind a silver box. 3/28/2008 5:45:22 PM |

ok, now that i've actually tinkered with it for 5 minutes, here are the real symptoms. I'm not sure how the hell they told me so wrong.
-no trouble starting -stumbles/misses over 3000rpm and won't go much over 3000rpms while driving -stumble is much more prevalent under load -tach goes crazy when stumbling is happening -ignition control module was replaced over the summer (not saying it isn't the problem or anything..just a fact)
The soldering of the main relay was also done this summer and I didn't know about it.. Again, not saying that isn't the problem, just saying the facts.
Now, I'm going to Hooters. When I return I expect answers people (jk)
