I called this about a month ago in some thread.

Quote :
"Cal fired men's basketball coach Ben Braun Wednesday after 12 seasons, citing lack of NCAA tournament appearances over the last five years.

Braun had a 219-154 record and guided the team to five NCAA tournament berths and three National Invitation Tournaments. In 1996-97, Cal reached the Sweet 16 and Braun earned Pac-10 coach of the year honors. He guided the 1998-99 team to the NIT championship.

The Bears finished ninth in the Pac-10 this season going 6-12, 17-16 overall. A year ago, Cal finished 16-17, 6-12 for eighth place in the conference. Two seasons ago, the Bears finished 13-16, 6-12 in the Pac-10 -- also for eighth place. Cal last made the NCAA tournament in 2003.

"This was an extremely difficult decision that was undertaken with great care and diligence," Cal athletic director Sandy Barbour said. "However, in the final analysis, I have determined that it is time for Cal to seek new leadership in our men's basketball program. Competing for conference championships and a place in the NCAA tournament are goals and expectations that are embraced at Cal. Unfortunately, we have not been able to consistently meet those expectations in our men's basketball program."

Braun, who came from Eastern Michigan, replaced Todd Bozeman 12 years ago after he was fired because of NCAA violations. Braun has a buyout in his contract and will be paid $985,000.

"I'd like to thank the Cal community for 12 great years of support," Braun said in a statement. "I've had the privilege to coach at one of the top universities in the country, and I'm proud of the program we've built. Going to eight postseason tournaments has been very special. I'm obviously disappointed that my staff and I won't be able to coach this team next year, and I feel they will be very successful."

The Bears had one of the top players in the country in Ryan Anderson, but injuries and inconsistencies prevented them from making the NCAA tournament. Cal beat New Mexico in the first round of the NIT but lost at Ohio State in the second round.

The Cal job has always been one of the most coveted in the West. Potential interest could come from former Stanford coach Mike Montgomery, among many others."

What the fuck is wrong with Gary Williams. The guy won a NC but he should really be on the hotseat now. He has completely fucked up any momentum they should have had from those two seasons. Unbelievable...

What about your boy Ben Braun? At least Williams has gotten past the 2nd round a couple times since the NC. I don't really follow Cal ball much, but you'd think his seat is Sendek-like now with their constant mediocrity. What're you hearing from the fans? He's had a ton of talent come through there."

5 STRAIGHT is a little different. Read the article again.

They haven't been in 5 years not gone 5 straight years. Nice comparison.

^ Ms. Sendek,

Tell me who beat in the first round of our last tourny appearance in 05? You know too much about sucking herb and too little about NC State.

^^ As soon as I saw the Herb hating in this thread I knew you would show up.

^ Actually it was in the first round of the 2006 tournament. And ESPN's fact checkers must suck because they say Cal was last in the tourney in 2003. What a bunch of morons. Anybody who follows college basketball closely/really gets into filling out brackets should have known that wasn't right.

Really? I was just going on the article. We lost in 03 when Richard Midgley pulled a 3 out of his ass. In 06 I WAS AT THAT GAME in 06 I think I know who we played. Cam Bennerman hit a 3 to break the tie with about 30 secs and we won 58-52 but thanks for giving me a history lesson.

^Glad we got rid of him too we are doing so much better.

just as well as he did his first years^

and I wonder where he might get picked up next, Indiana might look at him
College of Charleston perhaps

he's certainly a decent coach, would do well at a smaller program I am sure, then again i said the same thing about Doherty

Ernie Kent from Oregon will be next IMO. With Olson coming back to UA, I'd guess Kevin O'Neil gets the Cal job.

I'd bet my life Montgomery is Cal's next coach. He is still in the Bay Area and wants to coach again. Cal is perfect for him and he is perfect for Cal.
