Technically, the joining of the intialism LOL and the suffix ed, for example, would necessitate a hyphen. (e.g. LOL-ed). I posit that at least the suffix rule applies and probably the compound-element rule.
But since posts on TWW are not intended to be academic offerings--or even formal--one can simply choose LOLed or LedOL. Widespread use and tradition will dictate usage more than any definitive syntactic rules. 3/28/2008 1:07:56 PM |

^ Apostrophes do show omission or possession. But since the ed suffix is not a stand-alone word, such as what would be seen in a contraction, I wouldn't use the apostrophe in that way. 3/28/2008 1:21:52 PM |

Initialisms and acronyms have a life of their own--separate from the words they represent. And a warning: These abbreviations create ambiguity as identical letter groups multiply.
