I mean do you really have to ask...lets see 1997, it was the year MMMbop was released...so you take a guess.

Well depending on the part of the year, I was in either 4th or 5th grade...getting to shave my legs for the first time.

i was in 8th-9th grade, full of teen angst and hating every minute of private school
i was an outcast in baggy jeans, airwalks, and rusty beanies
i smoked my first cigarette
i was MVP for the JV soccer team
i quit doing dance competitions and transferred dance studios
i started hanging out with all the public school kids over the summer
the first person that i had a very close relationship with died--she was a "third grandmother"
i met my best friend, and we're still friends today

I was ending my sixth grade year and starting my seventh grade year in Beltsville, Maryland. I would transition from Beltsville Academic Center to Martin Luther King, Middle School.

The area begins its exponentially downward spiral to ghettoness as the first week, a gun is pulled on someone. My mom is officially out of work for two years now and I become the poster child for the school, being the only student below the poverty line with straight A's and taking the maximum number of honors classes.

On top of that, I involve myself in several different clubs to escape the pain of home life; EcoClub, Future Educators of America, the school newspaper, Project YES!, It's Academic! (Maryland's QuizBowl), WMLK - the school's TV show, the Science Bowl team, and Latin Club. I play the clarinet in the school band.

I continue my journey in Boy Scouts, becoming a Life Scout at age 12 and finding a calling in journalism as the Troop Scribe and Senior Patrol Leader of Troop 1033. I am also a Den Chief.

I also read a shit load of Animorphs. GigaPets are big this year. My mom becomes friends with the children who live in the crack house down the street. Seeing that I want a digital pet really bad, they steal a NanoPet for me from the mall.

My mom abandons me at my uncle's-and-dad's-girlfriend's house and heads towards Ocean City, Maryland. My dad comes up from North Carolina and takes custody of me, in what would continue years of custody battles and hostile emotions.

My best friends are Johnny Felts, now a stoner, and Ryan Boushell, now a law school student.

I just wanted to learn and entertain, goddammit.

1997 was kind of a bad year... I was:

falling out of NCSU,

running around with coke hoes,

drinking too much,

spending occasional quality time in the Wake County Jail
