I don't understand it.
Call the guy wacko if you want. He's worth over $100 million. I think just maybe he's doing something right.
Incidentally, I've never heard him proclaim the feats of Xenu or anything like that - I've only ever heard him discuss what is at the core of Scientology: self empowerment (which makes a lot of sense)...far from crazy.

you do realize that you can't be a scientologist and not believe the rest of that crazy shit, right?
that's like saying you're a christian, but that you ONLY believe in "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" (which, i agree, is how a lot of christians see it, even if they don't act it)
either way, any scientologist is a wackjob, and that's reason enough to hate on them 4/8/2008 9:42:01 PM |

Okay, fair enough.
But as a digression, has anyone here actually read about what the core beliefs of Scientology are? Put aside the insane alien story - it has little to nothing to do with the way they live their lives. 4/8/2008 9:43:32 PM |

see, i don't think you can objectively understand (or try to understand) scientology without the insane story...no, i don't think there's anything wrong with the other stuff (self empowerment and such), just like i think that, beliefs aside, the mormons have strong family values who are conscientious and genuinely good people...but they believe some crazy things, too
take away the crazy and these groups usually have a good side

dude, their beliefs are that psychiatrists are evil and that you need to give all your money to them in order to be cured of mental illnesses caused by crazy alien souls from millions of years ago.
sorry. that's fucked up
but, humour me. What are these "other teachings" of theirs that you think are admirable. Is it the part where you sue the piss out of anyone who says anything bad about you? Or is the part where they will put you in a hotel room and starve you to death while letting cockroaches feed on you while you are still alive, all in the name of "curing you" when you go into a hospital in perfect physical health?

Perhaps we have a misinterpretation of terms here. I'm referring to the practical, underlying lessons that scientology is based on, not the fact that it does indeed suck money from people to learn it or that the backstory is freaking crazy (...although, perhaps as crazy as magically turning water to wine). That is all I'm referring to. 4/8/2008 10:03:02 PM |
aaronburro Sup, B 53005 Posts user info edit post |
and what, preytell, are these practical underlying lessons? Are the ones that say you should sue the piss out of people who look at you funny? Or are they the ones that say it's OK to let cockroaches feed on living people. I'm just wondering.
because there ARE NO PRACTICAL LESSONS. The whole fucking thing is brainwashing, plain and simple. They claim to have "practical lessons" when they speak with people who aren't in the religion, because no one goes out and says "hey, we brainwash our followers, hyuck!"
Check this out, dude. I've got a new religion. I'll tell you that the religion is all about being nice to people and helping out the homeless. But, when I get you behind the closed doors of my church, I'll skullfuck you until your ass bleeds my semen. Do you like the practical teachings of my religion? 4/8/2008 10:08:01 PM |

dude. there is no connection to make. Either you are batshit insane and are brainwashed into thinking that cockroaches feeding on a live human being is acceptable in the name of a religion, or you are sane. It's really one or the other. 4/8/2008 10:10:44 PM |

L. Ron Hubbard was nothing more than a glorified (and money hungry) fiction writer who put together a wacked out story to attract weak-minded people and influence them into giving him and his "church" money in order to reach increased levels within said church. I think its funny that the only way to reach higher levels in scientology is by going through extensive auditing and giving more and more money to the church.
here's a pretty funny excerpt from wikipedia that just goes to show how wacked out their "teachings" really are:
Quote : | "Among these advanced teachings, one episode revealed to those who reach OT level III is the story of Xenu (sometimes Xemu), introduced as an alien ruler of the "Galactic Confederacy." According to this story, 75 million years ago Xenu brought billions of people to Earth in spacecraft resembling Douglas DC-8 airliners, stacked them around volcanoes and blew them up with hydrogen bombs. Their souls then clustered together, stuck to the bodies of the living and continue to do this today. Hubbard called these clustered spirits "Body Thetans," and advanced-level Scientologists place considerable emphasis on isolating these alien souls and neutralizing their ill effects." |

I'll give him points for dedicating himself to his projects, as well as putting the work in to complete the tasks he sets out to do. He has had a few good to great movie roles.
However, he isn't an honest person. Just confess to the gay thing. He isn't "getting the ladies in the theater" like he did in the late 80's to 1998 or so. Nobody bought any of his 3 marriages, and nobody buys this "man's man" persona he puts off.
He is egoistic to a fault. He has no concept of true reality. He cannot see society for what it is. He has ideas, and they are based on his concept of the world. Even without the Scientology, he is weird. He is over-anxious. He is a poor decision maker.
Watch him run Universal into the ground. Maybe if people stopped talking about him, he would just go away. Stop seeing his films; he isn't what he used to be. His acting is his real life, and no longer what he is/was onscreen. His time has come and gone. 4/10/2008 4:36:32 PM |
